As Paris Hilton would say, “That’s hot.” But perhaps too hot.
A Utah mom’s birthday celebration turned disastrous after she accidentally set her hair alight while trying to extinguish the candles on her cake. Footage of the b-day backfire is currently igniting the internet.
“I saw my whole life flash in front of my eyes,” Ana Oosterhouse told Kennedy News. “It was a very surreal experience and happened so quickly.” The fiery fiasco was sparked last month while the mom of six was hosting a joint birthday party for her and her 7-year-old son, Hunter.
In the combustive clip, the 34-year-old woman and her son can be seen sitting before two cakes while family and friends serenade them with the birthday song. Things go south, however, when the b-day girl bends over to blow out the candles, whereupon her hair inadvertently dips into the flames and catches fire like a Molotov lock-tail. The clip ends abruptly with half of Oosterhouse’s hair going up in flame while onlookers scream in panic.
“I saw the end of my hair catch on fire and it kind of just went up,” the aspiring lawyer described of the gender reveal party-evoking scene.
And while her initial reaction was to put out the blaze, Oosterhouse ended up holding onto the cake to ensure the inferno didn’t spread to anyone else in the room.
Thankfully, quick-thinking family members, including husband Dylan, rushed to the woman’s side. As there was no water on hand, they resorted to “smacking my hair and face with their hands to put the fire out,” said the grateful gal.
“I’m so thankful my family was there to get it out before it burnt more,” she gushed.
Unfortunately, the fire ended up singeing off all the hair on the right side of her head, along with her eyebrows and eyelashes, Kennedy News reported. It also left her with burns to her cheek, ear and chin.
And while Oosterhouse avoided permanent damage to her sight, she’s reportedly suffering blurry vision and sore eyes from a painful corneal burn she sustained during the ordeal.
She attributes the blaze to the massive amount of candles topping her birthday cake. The mom said she normally opts for the numbered cake toppers, but the store was out, so she bought a multi-pack and had her daughter adorn the confection.
Even then, she had a bad feeling as they were “burning really hot and fast,” Oosterhouse said.
Thankfully, both Oosterhouse and her family are taking the incident in stride. “My family now still joke and say, ‘Next year you and Hunter need to have a fire and ice party,’ and keep saying I’m going to get a fire extinguisher for Christmas,” she said.
And the birthday inferno won’t stop the party gal from throwing b-day bashes. Although, in the future, Oosterhouse says “she’ll never put more than two candles on a cake.”
