The Multicultural Dish That's A Street Food Staple In Rotterdam - Mashed

foody.indah.link

Have you heard about kapsalon? Atlas Obscura reports that this dish is a street food staple in the city of Rotterdam and consists of fries, meat from döner or shawarma, grated Gouda cheese, salad greens, garlic sauce, and sambal oelek. The dish is typically served in an aluminum container. It was invented in 2003 in a shawarma joint in Rotterdam when a Cape Verdean hairdresser Nathaniël Gomes mixed all his favorite foods into one dish. Soon, he started ordering kapsalon, which means "hairdresser," and the unique dish was born (via DutchReview).

Kapsalon is now a typical example of a Dutch multicultural dish — the meat has Middle-Eastern origins, the hot sambal sauce is originally Indonesian, and the Gouda cheese is probably the most recognizable Dutch product. But, in the end, the dish was invented by an immigrant, just as many other dishes in the Netherlands are — take rijsttafel, for example, an Indonesian feast meaning "rice table," which consists of small portions of beef, chicken, vegetables, skewers, fish stews, and various other ingredients (via InLivin). And nowadays, kapsalon is so popular that it can even be found in other variations — with chicken, falafel, and fish — and in other locations such as Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dish soap poisoning at Bay Area care home leaves one dead, police say - SFGATE

foody.indah.link

San Mateo police are investigating the death of a 93-year-old woman at a care home facility after she was possibly poisoned with dish soap.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening at the Atria Hillsdale care home facility in San Mateo, and left two other residents in hospital, SMPD said in a statement.

"SMPD began a comprehensive investigation and learned three home care residents were hospitalized after ingesting toxic chemicals," the statement read. "Tragically, one of the three residents, a 93-year-old female, was pronounced deceased at a local hospital."

Police did not provide additional information on the current condition of the two injured victims. The care facility claims that the dishwashing fluid was mistaken for juice.

"We can confirm three of our residents were recently transported to the hospital after mistakenly being served dishwashing liquid as drinking juice. We have been working with local authorities, who have informed us that one resident passed away," a Atria Hillsdale spokesperson told KPIX in a statement, adding that they are conducting an internal investigation alongside helping authorities.

The facility, located on East Hillsdale Blvd, approximately 20 miles south of San Francisco, costs on average around $4,500 a month and has a four-star rating on Family Assets, a website that connects families with care providers. SFGATE reached out to Alta Hillsdale for further comment but had not heard back at time of publication.

San Mateo police have asked that any witnesses who may have any additional information contact Sgt. Detective Paul Pak at (650) 522-7660 or pak@cityofsanmateo.org.

A. Zombie for president brings Walking Dead back to Dish Network (2012) - Undead Walking

foody.indah.link

In 2012 Dish Network dropped AMC Network channels, AMC, WE tv, IFC, and Sundance from its roster. The satellite cable provider sited fees associated with the new contract weren’t a good value for its subscribers. Fans and execs at AMC Network weren’t pleased with this change and publicly expressed their displeasure. One unique way was with a presidential campaign for one A. Zombie.

AMC Networks introduced the independent candidate, A. Zombie, who was running for president on the campaign to bring back the AMC Network channels to Dish Network subscribers. AMC took the drop from Dish Network seriously as it began in July 2012, and by August, fans had already missed a portion of the new season of Breaking Bad.

The Walking Dead was scheduled for an October 14 release date that year and fans weren’t happy with the notion that they wouldn’t be able to watch their favorite show.

The Walking Dead season 3

On August 20, 2012, the first campaign stop for A. Zombie was in San Diego. Mr. Zombie was joined by his wife Patty, who stated that her husband has dedicated his life and after-life to bringing equal viewing opportunities to all.

The A. Zombie Campaign schedule included stops in Dallas, Atlanta, and New York, along with stops at both Republican and Democratic National Conventions in Tampa and Charlotte, NC.

The campaign was successful as CNN reports by October 22, 2012, an agreement was drawn between Dish Network and AMC Network to restore the AMC channels to Dish’s lineup of programming. AMC was added immediately, just in time to allow subscribers to view the second episode of The Walking Dead’s third season. WE tv, IFC, and Sundance were restored by November 1, 2012.

It was a fantastic way to show fans’ support and AMC’s determination to fight for their lineup of shows, including The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

Starlink Wins in Legal Battle With Dish, Viasat Over Lower-Orbit Satellites - PCMag

foody.indah.link

A US appeals court has rejected lawsuits from Dish Network and Viasat that tried to reverse an FCC decision permitting SpaceX to operate Starlink satellites at lower orbits.

At issue is the FCC’s decision last year to allow SpaceX to launch 2,814 Starlink satellites into 540- to 570-kilometer orbits, down from the original 1,110- to 1,300-kilometer operational range.

The FCC made the decision despite objections from several rival satellite operators who argued that Starlink satellites could cause radio interference. In response, both Dish and Viasat filed lawsuits, demanding the US court system overturn the FCC’s decision.

But on Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld the FCC’s original decision, and said the legal claims from both Dish and Viasat lacked merit or standing. Reuters was first to report(Opens in a new window) the news.

During the court battle, Dish claimed the FCC had failed to fully consider how the Starlink satellites risked causing interference with Dish’s own satellite TV service. This included refusing to review reports from other outside experts.

However, in Friday’s ruling(Opens in a new window), the judges said the FCC properly followed its own procedures in determining that the risk of interference was minimal. The ruling even notes Dish itself “acknowledges that SpaceX’s desired changes pass muster under that approach.”

Viasat, on the other hand, argued the FCC should have prepared an environmental review before permitting SpaceX to operate the Starlink satellites at lower orbits. The company cited the risk of Starlink satellites colliding with its own. But the judges noted: “Viasat operates only a single satellite that flies close to SpaceX’s constellation, and it does not seriously contend that the probability of a direct collision is high enough to support Article III standing… This theory of injury is much too speculative.”

Recommended by Our Editors

Nevertheless, in a statement Viasat said: “We believe that the Court’s decision is a setback for both space safety and environmental protection. Had the Court forced the FCC to properly grapple with the complicated issues surrounding deployment of mega-constellations in LEO, we believe harmful impacts that otherwise may persist for decades or even centuries to come could have been avoided.”

Meanwhile, Dish told PCMag: “Today’s decision does not alter the FCC rule that prohibits SpaceX and other NGSO operators from interfering with the television service provided by DBS (direct broadcast satellite) operators like Dish. We will remain vigilant in ensuring that SpaceX operations do not harm our millions of satellite customers.”

Both companies have also opposed SpaceX’s other activities via regulatory filings with the FCC, including Dish's battle with SpaceX over the use of 12GHz radio spectrum for their respective services. So the public can expect the regulatory jousting to continue for some time.

Dish’s Boost Infinite Will Use “The Power of Three Networks” - How-To Geek

foody.indah.link
Boost Infinite logo
Dish Network

Dish Network has been rapidly building up its 5G mobile network, becoming a new fourth carrier to compete with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Now the company is teasing a future cell phone plan called “Boost Infinite.”

Dish’s 5G network has been live for a few months as “Project Genesis,” which is available in 120 cities across the United States. The network uses wireless spectrum acquired from T-Mobile and Sprint when the two companies merged in 2020. Dish has a long way to go before it has as many cell towers as other major networks, so Dish has roaming agreements with AT&T and T-Mobile — meaning people subscribed to Genesis can connect to their towers when a Dish tower isn’t nearby.

Dish is teasing a new postpaid wireless service, called “Boost Infinite” — presumably, a reference to the Boost Mobile carrier that Dish also owns. The company said in a press release, “Boost Infinite is creating the greatest value in the wireless industry with the power of three networks.” There’s a website where you can sign up for a waitlist, and Dish has created social media accounts on TwitterInstagramTikTok and Facebook.

Boost Infinite sounds like it could be Dish’s actual competitor to AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, instead of the Project Genesis mobile service that has been available for a few months. It makes sense to use a name more people are familiar with, and Boost is the company’s largest retail wireless brand — Dish also owns Ting Mobile, Republic Wireless, and Gen Mobile. Dish has 7.8 million wireless subscribers across all its brands, according to its Q2 financial results.

There’s no pricing information available yet, or details about which devices will be compatible with the wireless service.

The Dish Bobby Flay's Daughter Begged Him To Never Make Ever Again - Mashed

foody.indah.link

When the host of the duo's ET interview asked if there was a dish that Sophie Flay would prefer her dad not make again, both she and her dad were quick to answer. The dish in question? Lobster mac and cheese. Before his daughter could even answer, Bobby Flay held up a napkin and whispered "lobster mac and cheese."

ET's Rachel Smith seemed taken aback when the duo quickly shared the same response. When asked what made her dislike the mac and cheese so much, she responded, "I don't know... He didn't do it right the first time. It's only happened once in my whole life."

On a Season 12 episode of "Throwdown with Bobby Flay," Flay challenged Cal Hancock of Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co. to a lobster mac and cheese battle. Flay ultimately lost the battle, but the judges did deem his recipe "delicious." Flay's lobster mac and cheese recipe is published on Food Network's website and has a 4-star rating from 17 reviews. By the looks of it, it's safe to say he has redeemed himself from his initial lobster flop.

Minnesota's hot dish ministries serve parishioners in need - Star Tribune

foody.indah.link

As a volunteer at her church, JoAnn Blatchley has one of the most only-in-Minnesota titles around: She's a hot dish minister.

At St. John's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, the members of Blatchley's hot dish ministry keep track of fellow parishioners who need extra help or are going through a tough time and take turns cooking and delivering dinners to them.

"You realize, 'My goodness, somebody's spending all day at the hospital with their loved ones, let's make sure that we get this offered,'" she said. "People don't like to ask for help, but it's here."

While many churches work to provide meals to members of their congregations without making it official, hot dish ministries can be found across the state, at places of worship like Nisswa's Lutheran Church of the Cross and Minneapolis' Mayflower Church. They usually go hand in hand with other caring groups led by volunteers within the congregation, like a prayer shawl ministry for those who prefer crocheting to cooking.

"We know that loneliness is increasing in our society and that it is unhealthy to our souls and bodies," said the Rev. Sarah Campbell, the team lead minister at Mayflower, where the hot dish ministry is one of many congregational care groups, providing a way for members to support one another.

At St. John's, Blatchley often simply refers to the entire endeavor as "hot dish" — as in, "I'm not sure when we started hot dish per se, it's been around forever."

But decades ago, when she first moved here from the East Coast, she was unsure about the term — which has been what Minnesotans call a baked combo of meat and veggies since at least 1930, when the first hot dish recipe was recorded in Mankato's "Grace Lutheran Ladies Aid Cookbook."

"I knew what a casserole was, but then somebody told me to bring a hot dish to a potluck," Blatchley said. "Well, I figured it out."

Making connections

Each week, a big part of St. John's hot dish ministry mission includes talking with the church's rector and looking over prayer chain requests to figure out who would be especially helped with a meal. They keep things organized so that "one person doesn't get six casseroles and another person gets neglected," Blatchley said.

She and her co-director will give people a call and ask if they'd like a meal or two. While they help out in the short term, when there's a death in the family or a brief hospitalization, they also work to provide meals on a regular basis for those who need consistent help.

"We have had a number of those through the years, and especially with a long-term situation it really needs to be organized," she said. "I've gotten to know people better, and some I have a special connection with. It's not just reaching out to the people that you know, but people within the whole circle of the congregation."

Once they know who needs a meal, they call volunteers who provide the groceries, do the cooking in their own homes and deliver the prepared meals.

When it's her turn to cook, Blatchley's go-to hot dish is Cuban-style chicken with rice and peas.

"And a bag of salad and a loaf of French bread. That's my fallback," she said. "Some people do ground meats, pasta dishes."

Beyond crisis care

When members at Minneapolis' Mayflower Church formed their hot dish ministry nearly a decade ago, they wanted to commit to caring for those facing a crisis or transition and go beyond having basic meals stocked in the church freezer, said Christina Gough, the ministry's current coordinator.

They organize a spreadsheet and a calendar of about a dozen volunteers, who take turns each week to customize and cook meals to fit members' dietary needs and tastes, let them know when to expect a delivery, and stop by with the food.

"It gives it a personal touch, because you've already talked to the person and then they're expecting to see you," Gough said.

Hot dish isn't always on the menu, but the ministry's title is fitting, she said. "It feels cozy, it feels comforting," she said. "It taps into that idea of a comfort offering."

On a recent Saturday, hot dish ministry volunteer Belle Scott dropped off a supper of roasted chicken, roasted pears with Swiss chard and a dessert of peach cobbler at Jolene and Gene Roehlkepartain's house in St. Louis Park — the seventh delivery in the past six months as Jolene undergoes treatment for pancreatic cancer.

When it's Gough's week, she will often take what her own family is having for dinner — whether that's fajitas or homemade macaroni and cheese — and make extra.

"This makes it like, if I was having someone over to dinner, this is what I would give them," she said.

That also helps with another of the ministry's benefits, one for those doing the cooking:

"It gives you a chance to make a new friend," said Gough.

Dish Network Denied Rehearing in FCC License Auction Fraud Case - Bloomberg Law

The Dish Ryan Gosling Could Eat Every Single Day - Mashed

foody.indah.link

In an interview with Netflix's Latin America YouTube channel promoting "The Gray Man," Gosling revealed his beloved dish to be arroz con leche. It's not just any arroz con leche, but the one made by his partner Eva Mendes' mother, who comes from a Cuban background (per Hola). In the interview, Gosling affectionately describes the dish as "an angel crying on your tongue." Wow, talk about enticement for all of us to try it out. Arroz con leche is popular in Latin America and Spain and usually consists of rice, milk, water, sugar, and cinnamon. It can also be enriched with vanilla and raisins if desired (via New York Times).

Arroz con leche is not your ordinary rice pudding. Tastes Better From Scratch says that "American rice pudding usually uses leftover rice," while arroz con leche is made by cooking rice in a mixture of milk and cinnamon, often with the addition of condensed milk. The combination of these ingredients is pretty versatile as the dessert can be served warm or enjoyed cold as a refreshing treat. We'll try making an easy arroz con leche recipe, and then we can only hope that angels will also be crying on our tongues.

Dietitian’s Dish: Dietitian’s top tips for shopping on a budget

Published 5:34 pm Tuesday, August 16, 2022

Kristina Swanson

Corporate Hy-Vee Dietitian

Sticking to the budget is top of mind for many shoppers but can be challenging when planning family meals! This National Family Meals Month, with help from your Hy-Vee registered dietitian team, we hope to show you how shopping with health in mind does not have to break the bank. Skip the fast food and eat healthier to stick to your budget and health goals as a whole family!

Eating at home can be a healthier and less costly option when you follow these dietitian-approved tips:

MAKE MEAL PLANNING A PRIORITY: Planning meals in advance helps pinpoint the ingredients needed and makes shopping more efficient. Decide what you want to eat and buy just the ingredients called for in the recipes (after checking your pantry to make sure you don’t double up on ingredients you already have); that way you are not tempted to add in extra calories. Explore healthy recipes at Hy-Vee.com/recipes. The searchable database has hundreds of recipes listed according to category (appetizer, main dish, one dish, dessert, etc.). You also can search under special dietary considerations such as vegan, vegetarian, low-carb and diabetes-friendly.

GROCERY SHOPPING: Use Hy-Vee’s grocery delivery or pick-up to stop impulse buys and stick to your grocery list. You can ensure you are getting just what you need and sticking to your budget!

SHOP IN SEASON: Fresh fruits and veggies that are in season often taste better and are a cost-effective way to get more plants into your diet! Enjoy these while they are readily available and then switch to frozen in their off-season or canned unsweetened fruit and no-salt-added canned vegetables. Canned and frozen options are nutritiously dense, budget-friendly and perfect for keeping your pantry/freezer stocked with better-for-you sides and snacks!

SHOP HY-VEE’S EXCLUSIVE VALUE BRAND: That’s Smart! Stock your pantry with Hy-Vee’s exclusive value brand and save an average of 15-20% over national name brands! Using Hy-Vee’s That’s Smart! for pantry staples, canned goods, frozen items dairy and snacks is a great way to cook with quality ingredients without spending a fortune!

FOCUS ON NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS: Stock up on foods that offer a nutritional punch without knocking out your budget. Eggs, oatmeal, beans, brown rice, nonfat Greek yogurt, whole-wheat bread and multigrain pasta are just some examples of inexpensive, nutrient-dense foods you can plan satisfying meals around.

Enjoy these That’s Smart! Chicken Enchiladas — a delicious, family-friendly dinner option that is easy on the wallet!

That’s Smart! Chicken Enchiladas

All you need

• 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts

• 1 (15.5-oz) jar That’s Smart! mild salsa

• 1 (8-oz) pkg That’s Smart! cream cheese, cubed

• 1 tbsp That’s Smart! chili powder

• 1 (15-oz) can Hy-Vee no-salt-added black beans

• 1 cup That’s Smart! shredded imitation Cheddar cheese

• 8 Hy-Vee fajita-size whole-wheat tortillas

• 1 (10-oz) can Hy-Vee red enchilada sauce

All you do

1. Spray a 4-to-6-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray. Add chicken, salsa and cream cheese to slow cooker; sprinkle with chili powder. 2. Cook on HIGH for 3 hours or LOW for 5 hours, stirring occasionally.

3. Remove chicken from slow cooker and shred using two forks. Place chicken back in the slow cooker for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. Add 1/3 cup shredded chicken filling to each tortilla. Top with 1 tablespoon shredded imitation Cheddar cheese. 4. Wrap tightly and place seam-side-down in prepared dish. Cover with red enchilada sauce and wrap tightly with foil. Cover with enchilada sauce and wrap tightly with aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 1 month. When ready to serve, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until heated through (165 degrees).

It’s no secret that Dawn’s grease-cutting power makes it the go-to cleaner for the toughest kitchen jobs, including crusty casserole dishes and greasy cabinet doors. But there are dozens of other uses for this concentrated soap, both inside and outside your home.

Turns out, there’s no need for expensive specialty cleaners when you have a bottle of the blue stuff around! Here are 30 surprising uses outside of the kitchen where you can put Dawn to good use.

1. Spiff up patio furniture.

Outdoor chairs, tables, and kiddie pools that have gotten dirty over the summer or even mossy over the winter clean up fast. Mix 1/4 cup Dawn with one gallon warm water, then sponge away the grime. Rinse off and towel dry.

2. Shine up your dirty grill.

For greasy, caked-on grill grates, just mix 1/2 cup baking soda with enough Dawn to make a thick paste. Scrape the big debris off your grill grates, then coat them with the mixture, and let sit for 30 minutes. Scrub and rinse, and they’ll be good as new.

You can also use this mix to degrease the inside of the firebox too. Sponge it on, then scrub with the scrubby side of the sponge. Replace the drip tray with a bucket to catch the gunk, then rinse all the grime away with warm water.

3. Wash off the pavers.

Stone or cement pavers marred with bird poop? Moss? Sticky residue from messy trees? Just wet the surface well, mix 1/4 cup of Dawn with one gallon warm water, and use a brush to scrub it away.

4. Whip up a DIY, non-toxic weed spray.

Mix one gallon white vinegar, one tablespoon Dawn, and one cup of salt in a garden sprayer. Or cut the recipe down and mix the solution in a spray bottle for smaller jobs. Spray directly on the weeds on a sunny day, and they’ll brown in no time.

5. Wipe grime from garden and automotive tools.

Don’t put your tools away muddy or greasy. Mix one teaspoon Dawn with one gallon water, and use a sponge or rag to wash away the gunk.

6. Rinse off tire rims.

Using Dawn to wash a car won’t hurt it, but keep in mind it will strip away any wax and leave it unprotected, which is why car experts don’t recommend it. However, everyone agrees it works great to clean street grime from your tire rims. First hose off any debris. Then mix one tablespoon Dawn in a gallon of water, sponge it on, and rinse away.

7. Wash vinyl siding.

Eliminate dirt and moss from your vinyl siding, and make it look like new again. Mix one part Dawn to 10 parts water and use a soft automotive brush to apply it and scrub the grime away. Be sure to rinse from the top down to avoid getting water under the siding.

8. Eliminate bugs from your plants.

Dish soap dissolves the protective coating on bugs, such as aphids, mites, and ants, causing them to dry out and die. Mix two to five tablespoons Dawn with one gallon of water.

Test the mixture on just a couple leaves a day or two before spraying the whole plant to make sure it doesn’t cause damage. When spraying the plant, aim for the bugs. Be sure to apply when the plants aren’t in direct sun or they may burn.

9. Mix a DIY garden spray.

Neem oil is a great way to kill garden pests without damaging plants, but it needs an emulsifier to blend with water. Enter: Dawn! Combine one teaspoon Dawn with two tablespoons pure neem oil in one gallon of water. Spray on the buggy plants weekly until they’re gone.

10. Wash off oil stains on driveways.

If the oil has puddled, sprinkle non-clumping cat litter or baking soda to soak it up first. After removing the solids, apply Dawn directly on to the stain. Let it sit for about an hour, then scrub the area with warm water and rinse away.

11. Make de-icer for the sidewalk.

When steps and sidewalks get icy (but not piled with snow) pour on a mix of one teaspoon of Dawn dish soap, one tablespoon rubbing alcohol, and a half-gallon of warm water. The solution will keep the water from refreezing.

12. Have some bubble fun with the kids.

Want huge, long-lasting bubbles? Gently mix 1/2 cup Dawn with a half-gallon of warm water, and one tablespoon glycerin (look for it at drug stores) or corn syrup.

13. Trap pesky fruit flies.

In a small bowl, combine 1/2 vinegar and a few drops of Dawn. Cover with plastic wrap and poke a few holes. The vinegar lures the flies through the holes. Once the Dawn gets on them, they won’t be able to escape the mix.

14. Make fireplace bricks look better than ever.

Mix one gallon warm water with two tablespoons Dawn in a bucket. In a separate bucket, mix one gallon water and one cup white vinegar. Wet the bricks well with water, then apply the soapy mixture with a scrub brush. Rinse with a sponge dipped in the vinegar mixture to remove any remaining soap residue.

15. Treat your pet’s fleas.

Use Dawn to quickly get rid of adult fleas on pets. Here’s how it works: Soap will coat the fleas and make them sink and drown. It’s the perfect gentle treatment for puppies too young for flea treatments. Follow the bath with a flea comb to remove any stragglers and eggs. Keep in mind the soap can irritate sensitive skin, so dilute it well.

16. Remove buildup on hair.

If your hair is weighed down with product buildup or grease, you can skip the expensive clarifying shampoos and just use Dawn!

17. Unstick other sticky things from hair.

Little kids are notorious for getting things like gum, silly putty, homemade slime, Vaseline, or lotions in their hair. Just apply Dawn, and you can massage it out — without resorting to cutting your tot’s hair.

18. Clean hair brushes and makeup tools.

Soak combs and brushes in a little bowl of warm water and Dawn. It’s great for removing makeup from sponges, too.

19. Melt stickers and labels.

Rub Dawn on the gummy residue from stickers and labels, and watch the goo rinse right off.

20. Work wonders on windows.

Mix two cups water, 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar, and three drops of Dawn in a spray bottle. If cleaning outdoor windows, you can double or triple the recipe and mix it in a bucket. Spray or sponge on, then wipe or rinse off. The mixture is especially effective at cleaning windows that are exposed to grease and soot.

21. Remove soap scum.

Just squirt Dawn all over the tub, and use a stiff-bristled brush or broom to lather and scrub it away. For really tough jobs and hard water stains, combine equal parts Dawn and distilled white vinegar in a bowl or spray bottle. The vinegar dissolves the minerals, and the Dawn cuts the grime.

Credit: Cat Meschia

22. Unclog the drain.

Pour 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of Dawn into a clogged sink or toilet. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. For sinks, just run the hot water for a few minutes, and the water and soap should get the clog moving.

For toilets, heat a pot of water until hot but not boiling. Add the hot water to the toilet bowl, and let it sit for a few minutes before flushing.

Credit: Ghazalle Badiozamani

23. Pretreat clothing stains.

Oily stains from food, makeup, and automotive grease are no match for Dawn. Apply directly to the stain, let sit overnight if necessary, then wash as usual. You can add a little to the washing machine if laundering a full load of greasy gear, but be careful not to use too much or the suds can overload your washer.

24. Add to your first aid kit with DIY gel ice packs.

Fill a zip-top freezer bag partially full with Dawn and freeze. The soap won’t harden like water, so the pack can contour around sore muscles. Plus, it stays cold longer. Re-freeze as often as you like.

25. Take care of paint and grease spills.

Use Dawn to remove paint or grease from hands and paint brushes.

Credit: Sarah Crowley

26. Mop up dirty vinyl, linoleum, or tile floors.

You can mop these types of floors with a simple solution of one to two tablespoons of Dawn and a gallon of warm water. Your floor will look good in no time!

Credit: skaman306/Getty Images

27. Soak grimy air filters.

Soak the washable mesh filters on air purifiers, air conditioners, vent hoods, and even pool filters in a sink or bucket filled with warm water mixed with Dawn, then gently sponge and rinse.

Credit: Joe Lingeman

28. Wipe down vinyl or metal blinds.

After dusting or vacuuming the slats, wipe each one down with a mix of one part water to one part white vinegar and a few drops of Dawn. For super-dirty blinds, fill a bathtub with a few inches of warm water, add a few splashes of vinegar and squirts of Dawn. Let the blinds soak for an hour before wiping and rinsing.

Credit: lapas77/Shutterstock

29. Give your jewelry a boost.

Going out to a party? Need to spiff up your accessories? Mix a few drops of Dawn in a bowl of warm water. Add your jewelry, and let it soak for five minutes. Rinse and buff dry with a microfiber cloth. If you need to give it a gentle scrub after soaking, use a new, unused baby toothbrush (remnants of toothpaste may have an abrasive residue).

30. Keep eyeglasses and mirrors from fogging.

Rub a drop of Dawn on your lenses, then wipe off with a dry microfiber cloth. For mirrors, mix one teaspoon Dawn with one cup water and one cup white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray on the mirror and wipe away with a dry paper towel or microfiber cloth.

How do you use Dawn dish soap beyond the kitchen? Tell us your tips in the comments below.
