COVID-19: Study shows virus can infect heart cells in lab dish: Research uses stem cell technology to learn how coronavirus may directly attack heart muscle - Science Daily

foody.indah.link

A new study shows that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 (coronavirus), can infect heart cells in a lab dish, indicating it may be possible for heart cells in COVID-19 patients to be directly infected by the virus. The discovery, published today in the journal Cell Reports Medicine, was made using heart muscle cells that were produced by stem cell technology.

Although many COVID-19 patients experience heart problems, the reasons are not entirely clear. Pre-existing cardiac conditions or inflammation and oxygen deprivation that result from the infection have all been implicated. But until now, there has been only limited evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 virus directly infects the individual muscle cells of the heart.

"We not only uncovered that these stem cell-derived heart cells are susceptible to infection by novel coronavirus, but that the virus can also quickly divide within the heart muscle cells," said Arun Sharma, PhD, a research fellow at the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute and first and co-corresponding author of the study. "Even more significant, the infected heart cells showed changes in their ability to beat after 72 hours of infection."

The study also demonstrated that human stem cell-derived heart cells infected by SARS-CoV-2 change their gene expression profile, further confirming that the cells can be actively infected by the virus and activate innate cellular "defense mechanisms" in an effort to help clear out the virus.

While these findings are not a perfect replicate of what is happening in the human body, this knowledge may help investigators use stem cell-derived heart cells as a screening platform to identify new antiviral compounds that could alleviate viral infection of the heart, according to senior and co-corresponding author Clive Svendsen, PhD.

"This viral pandemic is predominately defined by respiratory symptoms, but there are also cardiac complications, including arrhythmias, heart failure and viral myocarditis," said Svendsen, director of the Regenerative Medicine Institute and professor of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine. "While this could be the result of massive inflammation in response to the virus, our data suggest that the heart could also be directly affected by the virus in COVID-19."

Researchers also found that treatment with an ACE2 antibody was able to blunt viral replication on stem cell-derived heart cells, suggesting that the ACE2 receptor could be used by SARS-CoV-2 to enter human heart muscle cells.

"By blocking the ACE2 protein with an antibody, the virus is not as easily able to bind to the ACE2 protein, and thus cannot easily enter the cell," said Sharma. "This not only helps us understand the mechanisms of how this virus functions, but also suggests therapeutic approaches that could be used as a potential treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection."

The study used human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), a type of stem cell that is created in the lab from a person's blood or skin cells. IPSCs can make any cell type found in the body, each one carrying the DNA of the individual. Tissue-specific cells created in this way are used for research and for creating and testing potential disease treatments.

"This work illustrates the power of being able to study human tissue in a dish," said Eduardo Marbán, MD, PhD, executive director of the Smidt Heart Institute, who collaborated with Sharma and Svendsen on the study. "It is plausible that direct infection of cardiac muscle cells may contribute to COVID-related heart disease."

The investigators also collaborated with co-corresponding author Vaithilingaraja Arumugaswami, DVM, PhD, an associate professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. Arumugaswami provided the novel coronavirus that was added to the heart cells, and UCLA researcher Gustavo Garcia Jr. contributed essential heart cell infection experiments.

"This key experimental system could be useful to understand the differences in disease processes of related coronaviral pathogens, SARS and MERS," Arumugaswami said.

Dish selects Fujitsu, Altiostar for 5G radios, Open vRAN - FierceWireless

foody.indah.link

Dish Network announced two major vendor agreements on its path to becoming the nation’s fourth national facilities-based carrier: Fujitsu for a “large purchase” but undisclosed number of radio units (RUs) and a multi-year agreement with Altiostar for a cloud-native Open vRAN software solution.

Dish said it will use Fujitsu's Low Band Tri-Band RU and Mid Band Dual-Band RU across the company's spectrum portfolio. Japan-based Fujitsu also will provide support through its integrated supply chain to deliver radio and antenna integration.

In addition, Fujitsu will manage DU/RU hardware validation between vendors, including Altiostar and Mavenir, which are delivering cloud-native 5G radio software to Dish. Mavenir was Dish’s first software vendor announced in April.

Join us to learn how IBM and Red Hat have combined to radically reduce network operations expenses with intelligent automation using open platforms, featuring a closed loop automation demo.

"As we deploy radio units and connect them to our cloud-native network, we look for industry-leading quality, best and proven radio performance and zero-touch automation," said Marc Rouanne, Dish executive vice president and chief network officer, who came to Dish in November after years at Nokia.

Leveraging Altiostar's software solution, Dish says it will be able to dynamically scale its network depending on the type of applications and services being deployed. “The openness, modularity, agility and scalability provided by Altiostar will enable Dish to quickly deploy new 5G services for consumers and businesses,” the company stated.

While legacy U.S. operators are moving to standalone (SA) 5G architecture versus their non-standalone (NSA) 5G networks, Dish contends that by using open architecture to build its first standalone 5G network, it’s able to work with the best vendors across the supply chain to serve multiple segments, including consumers, enterprises and emerging 5G vertical markets.

"Altiostar's proven expertise in O-RAN will allow us to build an open mobile network with the automation, resilience and agility needed to deliver services that will differentiate us in the wireless market,” Rouanne stated.

RELATED: Dish’s risk lies with the network—analyst

Rakuten Mobile, the Japanese mobile operator that launched commercial service in April, is an investor in U.S.-based Altiostar and uses its Open vRAN technology at scale. Dish CEO Charlie Ergen has said that Dish has learned a lot from Rakuten’s greenfield open RAN build, noting that the Japanese operator is “designing the right kind of network for the future.”

Dish has committed to the FCC that, by June 14, 2022, it will have deployed a core network and will offer 5G broadband service to at least 20% of the U.S. population using Dish’s AWS-4, lower 700 MHz E Block and H Block licenses.

In addition, the company promised that by June 14, 2023, it will offer 5G broadband to at least 70% of the U.S. population using its 600 MHz, AWS-4, lower 700 MHz E Block and H Block licenses.

Separately but related to the government’s approval of the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, Dish is acquiring Sprint’s prepaid assets, namely Boost Mobile, in a deal set to conclude tomorrow. That will give it a retail presence and ability to start serving customers with a seven-year MVNO pact with T-Mobile while it builds out its own 5G network.

RELATED: Dish not worried about funding for Boost, 5G network

According to Allnet Insight, Dish owns 94 megahertz of sub-6 GHz spectrum and 1,000 megahertz of millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum, which includes 377 megahertz of 12.2 GHz spectrum. That compares to, for example, 324 megahertz of sub-6 GHz spectrum that T-Mobile controls and 2,000 megahertz of mmWave spectrum that Verizon holds.

The secret behind this Alabama BBQ joint’s beloved cake - AL.com

foody.indah.link

Barbecue connoisseurs know to order the sliced pork sandwich with outside meat and a dollop of chow-chow when they go to Alabama’s Full Moon Bar-B-Que.

And if they have a sweet tooth, they often top off their meal with a slice of Full Moon’s almost-as-famous carrot cake with cream cheese-and-pecan frosting.

It is a recipe that goes back at least until 1986, when Pat and Eloise James opened their mom-and-pop barbecue joint, Pat James’ Full Moon Bar-B-Que, in a cozy, cinder-block building on Birmingham’s Southside.

Pat James, who served as an assistant football coach under Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama before he got in the restaurant business, oversaw the barbecue operation, and his wife, Eloise, took charge of the desserts.

While Pat and Eloise have long since passed on, their legacies live on at Full Moon Bar-B-Que, which has grown to include 15 locations around Alabama – with a 16th scheduled to open in Huntsville later this year.

Eloise James’ two dessert specialties were her “Half Moon” chocolate-chip-and-pecan cookies and her three-layer carrot cake, and they both remain staples on the Full Moon menu.

“The carrot cake sales are still strong to this day,” says David Maluff, who, along with his brother, Joe Maluff, bought Full Moon Bar-B-Que from Pat James in 1997.

Full Moon Bar-B-Que carrot cake

‘Desserts were her baby’

Dorothy Denson, fondly known as “Miss Dot” to the Full Moon family, started working for Pat and Eloise James not long after they opened their Southside barbecue joint, which they affectionately nicknamed “The Best Little Pork House in Alabama.” Denson retired last year.

Since Denson worked the barbecue pit, she never baked a cake, she says, but she well remembers how particular Eloise James was about her desserts.

“The desserts were her baby,” Denson says. “You had to do it her way. . . . She was really particular about her desserts.”

She was also particular about their presentation.

Each slice of cake was served on a plastic plate and snugly sealed with clear plastic wrap.

“A lot of people just put that cake in a container and say, ‘Here,’” David Maluff says. “Eloise wanted (it on) a plastic plate, and that film wrap had to be so tight that all you saw was the cake.”

Then, she tempted customers by putting the cakes and cookies right by the cash register.

“Her thought was, you put the cake and cookies in front of the customer when they are ordering at the register, they’ll always grab it, and add it to the order,” Maluff says. “It’s right in front of you. We still do that today.”

Full Moon Bar-B-Que carrot cake

The carrot cake sells for $3.99 a slice at Full Moon Bar-B-Que locations across Alabama. Half-cakes are also available for $18.99 and whole cakes are $35.99 (Photo courtesy of Full Moon Bar-B-Que.)

The secret ingredient

In early 1997, a little more than 10 years after they opened their barbecue joint, Pat and Eloise James handed the keys to their business over to the Maluff brothers.

For about a year after they sold their place, though, Pat James would drop in to greet customers and Eloise James would stop by to check on her cakes and cookies.

“She was always overseeing the desserts,” David Maluff remembers. “She took a lot of pride in that.”

One of the secrets to her carrot cake, he adds, was that she used 6-ounce jars of Gerber Baby Food Stage 3 pureed carrots in her recipe instead of shredded carrots. The baby food made her cakes moister than most.

“Our cake is pretty smooth,” Maluff says. “When I say smooth, there are no raisins in it, no shredded carrots in it, no walnuts in it. It’s very similar to a spice cake to me, just because it’s so creamy.”

Finding enough jars of Gerber Baby Food to keep up with the demand for the cakes presented a challenge, David Maluff says.

“A lot of these (distributors) that we bought food from -- like US Foods and Sysco -- they didn’t carry baby food, so we had to go to the grocery store and buy it from them direct,” he says.

Then, a few years ago, they hit a momentary snag when Gerber stopped selling the Stage 3 pureed carrots.

“We tried (using) pure carrots, real carrots, and making a puree with them,” David Maluff says. “We tried a little bit of everything.”

Eventually, they found a worthy substitute in an organic carrot puree that they purchase from a distributor in California.

Full Moon rendering

About 40,000 cakes a year

Since purchasing Full Moon Bar-B-Que 23 years ago, the Maluff brothers have expanded the dessert menu to include coconut, chocolate and key lime pies to go along with the carrot cake and Half Moon cookies.

“That still didn’t take away from the cake at all,” David Maluff says. “To this day, it’s one of our biggest sellers, along with the cookies. We sell a lot of cakes.”

How many?

Maluff starts to do the math.

Six to eight cakes per location, per day. Times seven days a week. Times 52 weeks a year. Times 15 locations.

It all adds up to roughly 40,000 carrot cakes a year, give or take a couple of hundred.

“A lot,” Maluff says.

Cakes ‘taste better’ on Southside

The original Full Moon Bar-B-Que where Pat and Eloise James started is still smoking five days a week. The dining area is temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but the drive-thru remains open.

Because the kitchen space is limited at that location, though, the carrot cakes and Half-Moon cookies are now baked at the Full Moon Bar-B-Que on U.S. 280. All the other locations bake their own cakes and cookies on-site, David Maluff says.

Perhaps it’s just nostalgia or maybe it’s because they miss seeing Eloise James, but regulars at that original Southside location swear the carrot cakes just taste better there, Maluff says.

And there’s no convincing them otherwise.

“Every store does their own except Southside,” he says. “And I still have people tell me the carrot cake tastes better (there). You can’t explain it to people.”

Life & cake downsize during pandemic - Boston Herald

It’s not the most dramatic news, but Costco’s announcement that it’s eliminating its iconic half-sheet cakes is a sadly telling indication of how much the coronavirus has changed the way we live now.

Those cakes have been the centerpiece of birthday parties and especially graduations for many. One will feed 50 people, and costs $20. Costco stopped selling them around the country for the past month.

Because we haven’t been able to hold large birthday parties. Nor have there been graduation bashes, with family and friends gathered for photos and cake. Spring festivities been virtual and small. Or drive-by celebrations, where folks honk as they parade past the honoree in a mini-convoy.

We keep our distance. There’s no need for something that feeds 50.

Costco has other, smaller cakes, but the message is clear: Life is very different. And there’s no sugarcoating it.

Well, summer is here, but it doesn’t seem as if the music is “Under the Boardwalk” or “Polka Dot Bikini.” At Eastern Point Beach, where I live in the City of Groton, weekends will be open only to city residents.

There will be no day passes to the glorious beach, and Town of Groton, Noank, half of Mystic and Groton Long Point will have to sun bathe and play with their children in the gentle waves Monday through Thursday.

I noticed on Facebook that at noon on Sunday, just a few chairs or blankets dotted the large sandy beach and there were few cars on the expansive parking lot. Neither will there be a snack shop, since, in past years, crowds would be four deep to get hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and ice cream.

But many restaurants that offered only takeout are beginning to open inside their businesses, although at way fewer than 50 percent occupancy. It will be a long slog for owners, some of whom I have known for decades. Recently I had breakfast at The Shack in Groton. The long counter was closed and tables were put away; booths and tables were at least 6 feet away, or maybe 8 or 10.

I am still cooking mostly at home. I have Zoom meetings and tele-physician appointments. I have had my hair cut and colored, which makes me feel better, but I do realize I am a very lucky woman (mostly for those who have to see me).

Then again, restaurant meals, hair appointments and plenty of food to cook at home is very much a first-world problem.

I spent some hours at Fitch High School’s graduation, among about 300 cars filled with family and students in the parking lot. There was a giant television with terrific audio. There is no doubt that none of us will ever forget the graduation of 2020.

Recently I also made a recipe given to me by Beth Horler, a friend who is a teacher in our school system. It is beyond delicious, easy to make and one bite will make us feel like a kid again. It uses a carrot cake boxed mix and each double cookie is filled with cream cheese frosting. I have a carrot cake I love that is from scratch and uses two jars of baby carrots.

Writer’s Stop Original Carrot Cake Cookie Sandwiches

Adapted from Beth Horler’s recipe

Makes 6 or 12 cookies, depending on how big the cookies are

1 box carrot cake mix

¾ cup water (per box instructions)

1/3 cup vegetable oil (per box instructions)

3 large eggs (per box instructions)

8 ounces cream cheese, softened (low-fat is fine)

8 tablespoons butter, softened

1 cup of confectioners’ sugar

½ cup crushed pineapple, drained

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Make the carrot cake recipe listed on the back of the standard box. Before you do, preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a cooking sheet (or use parchment or Silpat).

Drop round tablespoons onto cookie sheets. Place them in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes. Set them aside to cool.

In another large bowl, add confectioners’ sugar. Place butter and cream cheese inside the bowl. I also crushed the pineapple by hand a little more. Add vanilla extract to the rest of the bowl. Blend the ingredients together until frosting is creamy.

Place a tablespoon or more of the frosting on every cookie and sandwich them together. Forget the calories. Eat salad for the next two days.

On the Side

I had a 10 a.m. appointment in Old Saybrook, and I wasn't ready for breakfast before I left the house. When my appointment was done, it was too late for breakfast and too early for lunch, so I drove around town for about 20 minutes, thinking about lunch.

I parked at Jack Rabbits, wanting their incredible sliders. The menu mostly consists of wings and apps, salads and hot dogs, but my favorites are the sliders, of which there are 14, each more incredible than the next. Three are about equal to one burger.

I ordered two Pepe La Pew (grilled apples, applewood-smoked bacon and brie) sliders and one Boston Burger (caramelized onions, bacon, American cheese and Magic sauce) sliders. Eating these sliders, about 1½ inches in diameter on perfectly sized buns, made my week amazingly happy. And I also took a Cobb salad to go, for my dinner at home.

Tips for homemade wedding cakes? Plan and `don't go wild' - The Republic

foody.indah.link

Even in a pandemic, folks are getting married. And where there’s a wedding — even a small one in the backyard — there’s usually a cake.

Home bakers looking to make their own wedding cakes don’t need a fancy, multi-tiered tower. But how can they create something that rises above the ordinary?

First, don’t be overly ambitious, says Jocelyn Delk Adams, cookbook author and founder of the Grandbaby Cakes blog. People tend to put a lot of pressure on themselves when making wedding cakes.

“Don’t go too wild,” she cautions. Make a practice cake or two so you feel prepared for the big day.

Preparation is the key, agrees special-occasion cake baker Ron Ben-Israel, owner of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes in New York City.

“Prepare and simplify the process by writing down all of the different stages,” he says. “Separate out the pieces of the process, and write down what each will require.”

List the ingredients you will need and make sure you can find them all, since items like flour and baking powder might be in short supply.

Ben-Israel emphasizes the need to find your cake recipes, including fillings and icings, from a reliable source.

The good news is that cake layers can be baked and frozen, well wrapped, weeks in advance. Defrost the wrapped cakes in the fridge. Ben-Israel says it’s easier to assemble and decorate cakes straight from the fridge (not the freezer, because of possible condensation as they defrost).

Fillings and icings can be made days ahead. Remove them from the fridge and let them reach room temperature, then blend them again and spread at room temperature.

And shortcuts are OK. Says Adams: “If you don’t feel like you are good technically at baking, don’t be afraid to doctor up a cake mix! There are so many ways you can make a cake mix feel more special.”

One thing I learned the hard way is the importance of a crumb layer of frosting. This is the technique of applying a very thin layer of frosting to the cake and allowing it to firm up before you apply the final, thicker layer. The first layer might pick up some crumbs, but then seals them in, so the subsequent icing layer won’t pull up more crumbs and mess up the clean look of the cake. This is important when you are frosting a chocolate cake with white frosting, for instance.

Single-tier cakes are simpler, and if you are looking to do more than one tier, Ben-Israel urges you to read up on how to structure a multi-layered cake. Check out videos on YouTube to learn the physics of it. When I made some rudimentary wedding cakes for friends in days past, I placed the top layer on a cardboard round (camouflaged by icing), and before placing it on top of the bottom layer, I inserted some straws cut to the height of the lower cake layer in a circle in the middle of the cake to support the top layer.

As for decoration, Ben-Israel and Adams both advise keeping it simple. Ben-Israel says you might skip the piping altogether, or if you do want to use a bag with pastry tips, “think of Keith Haring and cover the whole cake with doodles. Don’t go for straight lines.”

He also advocates for candies, sprinkles, and edible flowers (not sprayed with anything). He suggests using multicolored candies to create a stained-glass-window effect.

If you are feeling extra-creative, Ben-Israel says, mix some food colors with a clear alcohol like vodka, and paint them like water colors over the frosting. “If the colors start dripping? Great! Drip the colors all over the cake.“

One perk of baking a cake for a small wedding party: You can really think about the flavors that the couple loves.

“Your cake can reflect the personality of you and your fiancé in a way that might not have felt possible when you are hosting a big wedding and worrying about being a people-pleaser,” says Adams.

Erin Butler, director of volunteer services for City Harvest, a hunger-relief organization in New York, knows exactly what she wants for her cake when she gets married this summer to fiancé Ben Cohen.

“The first time Ben came to visit my family in Florida, I took him to get a Publix supermarket cake, which is totally reminiscent of my childhood,” she says. It was the cake her family bought for every celebratory occasion, and Butler and Cohen dug into Google forums, searching for the recipe.

“There are certain traditions that we are throwing away, but this Publix-inspired wedding cake feels like a real important piece of the puzzle in making our wedding feel special,” she says.

Adams also suggests thinking beyond cake.

“You actually don’t have to adhere to the traditions so much right now,” she says. “The tradition is really cutting the dessert together, so you could cut a pie together, if that’s what you like.”

Try to have fun with the process, she says, maybe making the cake together and creating that memory.

“It will make it taste sweeter — the fact that you created that cake or dessert together for your special day.”

Coronavirus: Costco stops selling half-sheet cakes - The Mercury News

The past few months have been chaotic for Costco customers, with product limitations, long lines and the temporary elimination of free food samples. Now, it appears there’s another change for devoted shoppers: Costco has eliminated the iconic half-sheet cakes that are the centerpiece of graduation and birthday parties.

Costco has quietly stopped selling the $20 half-sheet cakes across its US stores for the past month, instead pointing people toward its 10-inch round cakes and other assorted bake goods.

“To help limit personal contact and create more space for social distancing, Costco has reduced service in some departments,” the company explained to outraged customers on its Facebook account. In a statement to the New York Times, Costco said it has no plans to immediately bring back the half-sheet cakes and said the round cakes are “resonating with our members.”

Costco didn’t immediately return CNN Business’ request for comment.

The decision also coincides with a recommendation from several US states and health agencies to avoid or prohibit large gatherings in light of Covid-19. Half-sheet cakes feeds around 50 people, while its 10-inch round cakes feeds around a dozen.

Kroger and Sam’s Club stores have also appeared to stopped selling the half-sheet cake, according to an online search. However, Walmart, Albertson’s and H-E-B are still selling sheet cakes of various sizes.

Despite a growing number of coronavirus cases, a Costco executive previously told CNN Business it’s “trying to get back to normal, as areas around the country are trying to do the same.”

The chain started bringing back free food samples in a handful of stores and plans to roll them out to additional locations in coming weeks. Costco is also loosening restrictions on the number of people members are allowed to bring with them during shopping trips.

Costco Discontinues Half-Sheet Cake, Apparently Because of Covid-19 - The New York Times

foody.indah.link

It had been a long quarantine for Megan Engles and her family, and they desperately needed a reason to celebrate. So when their dog Linus’s birthday arrived, Ms. Engles, who lives in Kansas City, Mo., did what she would do for any other special occasion: She headed to her local Costco to pick up a sheet cake. But there were none to be found.

Costco’s half-sheet cakes, rectangular creations beloved by shoppers for their affordability and freshness, have long been a staple at birthday parties, graduations and other large events. But like handshakes and crowded bars, the cakes may have become another casualty of the coronavirus.

Half-sheet cakes are not currently being sold at any location in the U.S., and the company has no immediate plans to bring them back, Costco said in a statement on Thursday. The bakeries instead will focus on round, 10-inch cakes that “seem to be resonating with our members,” the statement said.

While Costco would not elaborate on the specific reason for discontinuing sales of the half-sheet cake, the company indicated in a response to several customer comments on Facebook that it was related to the coronavirus pandemic. “To help limit personal contact and create more space for social distancing, Costco has reduced service in some departments,” the company wrote. “At this time, we are not making sheet cakes for special order.”

Costco sheet cakes have played a role in most of Ms. Engles’s family events, from her grandmother’s 100th birthday party to anniversary celebrations.

“They’re delicious,” Ms. Engles said. “I don’t know if they’re fresh or if Costco uses superior ingredients, but they’re delicious.”

The frosting on the grocery store cake she settled for on Linus’s birthday tasted waxy, and the cake was more expensive, she said.

While Ms. Engles realizes that under coronavirus protocol, there are few, if any, large-scale gatherings happening that would require a large cake, Ms. Engles said she thought customers should have the choice to buy one — even if that means having leftovers to freeze. Costco’s half-sheet cakes, which were advertised as serving 48 people, cost less than $20, customers said. Two cake flavors were offered: white, filled with two pounds of vanilla cheesecake mousse and topped with white buttercream frosting; and chocolate, filled with two pounds of chocolate mousse and iced with chocolate buttercream. Customers could choose from a variety of designs, including flowers, lattice hearts or a dinosaur.

The company first announced in a video on Facebook last month that it was discontinuing its half-sheet cake, prompting an online outcry from customers. Several commenters said that sheet cake was the only reason they had splurged on a Costco membership. One customer said she had served the cake at her wedding and had bought it every year for her anniversary.

When Shala Reed, of Yorkville, Ill., became a Costco member, her first purchase was a chocolate sheet cake that read “Congrats on your new Costco card.” She said she had bought a sheet cake every month since.

  • Frequently Asked Questions and Advice

    Updated June 24, 2020

    • Is it harder to exercise while wearing a mask?

A commentary published this month on the website of the British Journal of Sports Medicine points out that covering your face during exercise “comes with issues of potential breathing restriction and discomfort” and requires “balancing benefits versus possible adverse events.” Masks do alter exercise, says Cedric X. Bryant, the president and chief science officer of the American Council on Exercise, a nonprofit organization that funds exercise research and certifies fitness professionals. “In my personal experience,” he says, “heart rates are higher at the same relative intensity when you wear a mask.” Some people also could experience lightheadedness during familiar workouts while masked, says Len Kravitz, a professor of exercise science at the University of New Mexico.

    • I’ve heard about a treatment called dexamethasone. Does it work?

The steroid, dexamethasone, is the first treatment shown to reduce mortality in severely ill patients, according to scientists in Britain. The drug appears to reduce inflammation caused by the immune system, protecting the tissues. In the study, dexamethasone reduced deaths of patients on ventilators by one-third, and deaths of patients on oxygen by one-fifth.

    • What is pandemic paid leave?

The coronavirus emergency relief package gives many American workers paid leave if they need to take time off because of the virus. It gives qualified workers two weeks of paid sick leave if they are ill, quarantined or seeking diagnosis or preventive care for coronavirus, or if they are caring for sick family members. It gives 12 weeks of paid leave to people caring for children whose schools are closed or whose child care provider is unavailable because of the coronavirus. It is the first time the United States has had widespread federally mandated paid leave, and includes people who don’t typically get such benefits, like part-time and gig economy workers. But the measure excludes at least half of private-sector workers, including those at the country’s largest employers, and gives small employers significant leeway to deny leave.

    • Does asymptomatic transmission of Covid-19 happen?

So far, the evidence seems to show it does. A widely cited paper published in April suggests that people are most infectious about two days before the onset of coronavirus symptoms and estimated that 44 percent of new infections were a result of transmission from people who were not yet showing symptoms. Recently, a top expert at the World Health Organization stated that transmission of the coronavirus by people who did not have symptoms was “very rare,” but she later walked back that statement.

    • What’s the risk of catching coronavirus from a surface?

Touching contaminated objects and then infecting ourselves with the germs is not typically how the virus spreads. But it can happen. A number of studies of flu, rhinovirus, coronavirus and other microbes have shown that respiratory illnesses, including the new coronavirus, can spread by touching contaminated surfaces, particularly in places like day care centers, offices and hospitals. But a long chain of events has to happen for the disease to spread that way. The best way to protect yourself from coronavirus — whether it’s surface transmission or close human contact — is still social distancing, washing your hands, not touching your face and wearing masks.

    • How does blood type influence coronavirus?

A study by European scientists is the first to document a strong statistical link between genetic variations and Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. Having Type A blood was linked to a 50 percent increase in the likelihood that a patient would need to get oxygen or to go on a ventilator, according to the new study.

    • How many people have lost their jobs due to coronavirus in the U.S.?

The unemployment rate fell to 13.3 percent in May, the Labor Department said on June 5, an unexpected improvement in the nation’s job market as hiring rebounded faster than economists expected. Economists had forecast the unemployment rate to increase to as much as 20 percent, after it hit 14.7 percent in April, which was the highest since the government began keeping official statistics after World War II. But the unemployment rate dipped instead, with employers adding 2.5 million jobs, after more than 20 million jobs were lost in April.

    • What are the symptoms of coronavirus?

Common symptoms include fever, a dry cough, fatigue and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Some of these symptoms overlap with those of the flu, making detection difficult, but runny noses and stuffy sinuses are less common. The C.D.C. has also added chills, muscle pain, sore throat, headache and a new loss of the sense of taste or smell as symptoms to look out for. Most people fall ill five to seven days after exposure, but symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as many as 14 days.

    • How can I protect myself while flying?

If air travel is unavoidable, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself. Most important: Wash your hands often, and stop touching your face. If possible, choose a window seat. A study from Emory University found that during flu season, the safest place to sit on a plane is by a window, as people sitting in window seats had less contact with potentially sick people. Disinfect hard surfaces. When you get to your seat and your hands are clean, use disinfecting wipes to clean the hard surfaces at your seat like the head and arm rest, the seatbelt buckle, the remote, screen, seat back pocket and the tray table. If the seat is hard and nonporous or leather or pleather, you can wipe that down, too. (Using wipes on upholstered seats could lead to a wet seat and spreading of germs rather than killing them.)

    • What should I do if I feel sick?

If you’ve been exposed to the coronavirus or think you have, and have a fever or symptoms like a cough or difficulty breathing, call a doctor. They should give you advice on whether you should be tested, how to get tested, and how to seek medical treatment without potentially infecting or exposing others.

Ms. Reed vowed to flood Costco’s suggestion box until the company brings them back.

Jessica Luke, of Jeffersonton, Va., said she had purchased sheet cakes at least three times a year. The last ones she bought were for her son’s 5th birthday last year. One was a vanilla cake decorated with an American flag, the other a chocolate cake decorated with a red, white and blue unicorn.

“We have been members of Costco for over a decade and purchased those cakes for every excuse we could,” Ms. Luke said. “The cakes have a filling that is rich and sweet and keeps the cake moist.”

This isn’t the first time Costco shoppers have gone to battle for a food item. Customers expressed similar dissatisfaction when the company announced it would no longer sell Polish hot dogs at the food court. (The hot dogs have not returned.)

As for the future of the half-sheet, some customers are holding out hope that the company will reinstate it when large gatherings are allowed.

“Cakes are at the very center of celebrations,” Ms. Engles said. “Entire events are even centered around the cutting of the cake. Being able to have them in this time helps create joy and still allows for celebration in a time that some people may feel there isn’t a lot to celebrate.

Stanford Dish to reopen next Monday - The Mercury News

foody.indah.link

The Stanford Dish recreational area will reopen next Monday with new infrastructure changes to promote social distancing.

Stanford has added an access gate at Stanford Avenue, as well as signage turning the 3.3-mile loop trail into a one-way counterclockwise path. Visitors are also encouraged to bring face coverings and stay at least 6 feet apart from anyone not in their immediate household or social bubble.

“We’ve carefully worked to balance the need to adhere to public health guidance with preserving what people enjoy most about the Dish,” associate vice president for community engagement Megan Swezey Fogarty said in a news release Monday.

Starting Monday, the Dish will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The popular recreational area has been closed since April 3, after a “persistent minority” of visitors flouted rules intended to maintain social distancing and comply with Santa Clara County’s shelter in place order.

In addition to the hiking and jogging trail, the Dish is home to academic research, habitation conservation programs and environmental restoration efforts.

Dish, SpaceX drive calls for new look at 12 GHz band - FierceWireless

foody.indah.link

Dish Network’s planned entry into the wireless space as the nation’s fourth facilities-based carrier and SpaceX's plans to close the digital divide are driving calls for the FCC to take a closer look at the 12 GHz band.

Several entities want to see the FCC open a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that would thoroughly vet all the questions and eventually lead to a new decision on how the 12 GHz band should be used.

Federated Wireless and WeLink Communications are the latest companies asking for an NPRM. The Competitive Carriers Association (CCA), INCOMPAS, Public Knowledge, Computer & Communications Industry Association and Open Technology Institute at New America earlier urged (PDF) the commission to move forward on the band.

Sponsored by IBM

[Webinar] Intelligent Automation for Telco Network Cloud

Join us to learn how IBM and Red Hat have combined to radically reduce network operations expenses with intelligent automation using open platforms, featuring a closed loop automation demo.

They argue that a lot has changed since the rules for direct broadcast satellite service (DBS) were created in 2003—and even since Dish petitioned the FCC (PDF) for a rulemaking back 2016 that would allow for sharing DBS spectrum with 5G services. Dish holds licenses in the band covering 75% of the U.S. population, and RS Access, after purchasing it from MDS in 2018, holds licenses covering 15%.

According to RS Access, SpaceX is asking for modifications that would “irreparably harm America’s future 5G leadership by impairing the multichannel video distribution and data service (MVDDS) operating in the 12.2-12.7 GHz band (12 GHz band)."

RS Access argues that SpaceX, “under the cloak of an ostensibly routine license modification,” would have the commission “suffocate the 5G Petition and make a de facto policy decision of enormous strategic significance, potentially permanently eclipsing U.S. 5G leadership.”

SpaceX already has access to 14,050 megahertz of spectrum outside of the 12 GHz band to conduct its future operations, and the FCC recognized the important interests of MVDDS licensees when it put SpaceX on notice that it should not rely on access to the 12 GHz band pending a future rulemaking, according to V. Noah Campbell, founder of RS Access, the second larger holder of MVDDS spectrum after Dish.

RELATED: Dish-backed 12 GHz plan returns to 5G stage

“The Commission can and must first resolve whether it seeks to allocate the 12 GHz band for 5G in support of the Chairman’s stated priority before it proceeds with SpaceX’s proposed license modification,” Campbell told the FCC (PDF). “Now is the time to initiate a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) on the future of the 12 GHz band so that this critical resource can be unleashed to meet the Commission’s urgent 5G goals.”

However, SpaceX says the 12 GHz has become a “premier workhorse” band for satellite services. Proceeding with any proposal that would undermine current and future satellite use in the band would place achievements at risk, including for services in the most rural and remote areas of the country.

SpaceX says the commission issued non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) fixed satellite service (FSS) licenses authorizing use of the 12 GHz band in 2017, and in just the past year, NGSO operators have launched more than 500 satellites using the band. Several hundred more satellites are scheduled to be deployed in the next several months.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has made clear, "no one should be left unconnected," SpaceX told the commission (PDF) earlier this month, adding that the 12 GHz band is an essential component to closing the digital divide with its satellites.

Need for speed

Public Knowledge opposed the Sprint/T-Mobile merger and didn’t think it was good policy to count on growing Dish as a fourth national network, but “the fact is that’s what we have,” therefore, it wants to see Dish succeed, said Harold Feld, SVP at Public Knowledge.

It no longer makes sense to argue about the 12 GHz band in the context of a petition for rulemaking; an NPRM would open up all the questions about the band and give everyone a chance to review what’s going on. One could presume it’s possible to do spectrum sharing in the band in a way that would grant Dish’s petition in substance but protect SpaceX and other NGSO systems, according to Feld.

There’s 500 megahertz of spectrum at play here, and a lot has happened since the rules were last reviewed in 2003, he noted. It’s also not clear at the moment which one of the outcomes is going to happen, but “we definitely believe if you get the ball rolling, something good is going to happen,” he said.

Stanford to reopen Dish area

Stanford has made improvements to the Dish to promote a safe and healthy environment as it welcomes back the community for recreation in the popular area beginning on July 6.

Summertime walks in the Dish area on Stanford’s campus, a popular activity for Stanford community members and neighboring residents, will again be possible starting on Monday, July 6.

An example of STAY SAFE program signs that are being installed at entrances to the Dish area to provide information about safely navigating the path. Additional signage and ground markings have been placed along pathways. (Image credit: Land, Buildings and Real Estate)

Since closing the Dish area on April 3, the university has worked on a series of improvements to comply with Santa Clara County health orders and promote proper physical distancing. Changes include the installation of a new pedestrian access gate at Stanford Avenue and temporary signage throughout the Dish area, the smoothing of areas next to the pathway to allow more room for passing, and pavement striping to clearly indicate the direction of one-way pedestrian foot traffic.

The Dish will be open daily during its normal summer hours of 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“We are excited to once again welcome the community to the Dish area, and we are committed to providing this beautiful space for the enjoyment of all,” said Megan Swezey Fogarty, associate vice president for community engagement. “As we invite our community back to the Dish, we also request your assistance to create a fun and healthy experience.”

In addition to providing opportunities for hiking and jogging along its pathway, the Dish supports a variety of purposes, including academic research, habitation conservation programs and environmental restoration efforts.

New health and safety guidelines

The Dish area will look and operate a little differently in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and visitors are being asked to follow new rules that are consistent with state and local public health guidance.

The main Dish loop will have counterclockwise circulation to leave adequate space for passing on the left side of the path. (Image credit: Land, Buildings and Real Estate)

Many of the guidelines are now familiar aspects of our daily routines: Do not enter the Dish area if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms; maintain 6 feet of distance at all times from people not in your immediate household; bring a face covering and wear it when you cannot physically distance from those who are not in your household; and avoid gathering in groups.

There are also some new rules specific to navigating the Dish pathway. The main 3.3-mile loop will now be one-way in the counterclockwise direction to allow for passing at a safer distance. Visitors must plan to complete the loop to maintain the directional flow.

All visitors, even those who are part of the same household, are expected to walk single file on any path from a gate to the main Dish loop. While on the loop, two people from the same household or social bubble may walk side-by-side as long as they remain on the far right side of the path. The left side of the path is reserved for passing others, similar to how one passes a slower moving vehicle on a roadway – when passing another person or two-person group, move to the left of the pathway, pass the other people and return to the right side of the pathway after allowing at least 6 feet between you and the other group.

As the local drinking fountain is temporarily out of service, visitors are encouraged to bring their own drinking water.

Physical improvements

Infrastructure improvements have also been made to facilitate the return of visitors.

A new gate has been installed at the Stanford Avenue entrance to the Dish to allow for separate entry and exit points. Sections of pathways from all gated entrances to the loop are also being striped to indicate lanes for entering and exiting.

The university’s STAY SAFE signage program, already deployed in campus facilities and exterior spaces, has been extended to the Dish area to promote health and safety. Signs will be placed at entry gates and trail markers with information about how to safely navigate the path and pass other people, as well as reminders of guidelines such as the use of face coverings and keeping 6 feet of distance from those not in your household.

As walkers and joggers make their way around the loop, pavement striping is being used to show the correct direction of pedestrian foot traffic. Areas adjacent to the paved pathway connecting the Stanford Avenue gate to the main loop have also been smoothed to provide extra room for maintaining proper distance.

“We’ve carefully worked to balance the need to adhere to public health guidance with preserving what people enjoy most about the Dish,” said Swezey Fogarty. “As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, we’ll continue refining our approach in order to create an enjoyable outdoor experience for the community.”

More information and the latest updates about accessing and safely using the Dish area are available here.
