Virginia police officer resigns after 'multiple traumatic experiences' -- and opens cake shop - wtvr.com

foody.indah.link

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A Newport News police officer has decided to leave law enforcement and trade it in for something sweeter.

Olajuwon Bynoe served several years in the U.S. Army and a few years with the Newport News Police Department. However, after the birth of his fourth child, he decided it was time for a change.

"In the past two years, I’ve experienced multiple traumatic experiences with my co-workers. I kinda’ wanted to get a change of pace and start making cakes full-time," Bynoe said.

Bynoe is following in his father’s footsteps. He said when he was young, he would help his father in his cake shop in New York.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing some businesses to struggle and even close, he felt it was the right time. He has four young children including a newborn. His wife, Aysia, was there by his side, helping with the business on opening day Saturday.

"So, when he said that, ‘You know, I want to quit being a police officer,'" explained Aysia. "With everything going on, the stresses, I was in full support. I was like, ‘Let’s do it.'"

O’s Cakes is located inside the Patrick Henry Mall near the food court. It offers cakes by the slice, custom cakes, cupcakes, and cakes in jars. A few of the flavors include Strawberry Shortcake, Cinnamon Crunch, and Oreo Red Velvet.

Setting the Record for Fastest Edible Car Was a Piece of Cake - The Drive

foody.indah.link

A Guinness Book of World Records entry exists for just about anything you can think of. There’s the world’s largest banana car, the world’s longest limousine, the largest parade of Volvo cars, even the world’s hairiest car (may I say…ew?). As of a couple of days ago, a new record-holder is (literally) the icing on top: the fastest edible car.

Constructed on an aluminum chassis, the 649-pound car took a team of nine people 46 hours to build, led by celebrity cake artist Mike Elder. The Black Sheep Custom Cakes owner and Food Network guest set a similar record in the past, and he came up with this race to benefit the opening of the ilani casino on the Cowlitz Reservation in Washington. He and the team built two edible cars–one white, one black–and Elder raced race car royalty Michael Andretti down a parking garage ramp. (Spoiler alert: Andretti won.)

The car Andretti was piloting was a replica of his 1991 IndyCar National Championship race car, and Elder’s car was modeled after a race car Andretti’s father Mario had driven in a race.

“I’ve driven a lot of vehicles, and this was by far one of the most unique,” Andretti said in a press release distributed by ilani.

Earlier this year, we featured a TikTok-famous baker who created a nearly full-size cake version of a Land Rover Defender, including an edible engine; it wasn't drivable but it fed more than 2,000 people, so that's worthwhile in my book. Per Guinness Book rules, Elder's car had to be 90% edible to qualify. The cake artist, who once owned a hot rod shop, started with a superlight aluminum chassis fitted with axles and wheels that weighed about 65 pounds in total. For Andretti’s car, the team of bakers piled on 139 sheet cakes with a heavy hand of buttercream frosting and a sheet of fondant to seal it all together. Even the sponsor stickers were edible. Elder’s car was made up of 145 sheet cakes with buttercream and fondant and then painted with food-grade black coloring. Each car was about 12 layers of cake tall at the cockpit level.

The car Andretti was steering set both Guinness Book of World Records benchmarks: fastest edible vehicle at 17.08 miles per hour, and longest distance covered by an edible vehicle at 349.81 feet (a little more than the length of an American football field). A footnote to Elder's records is a rule that the edible car had to be consumed afterward, so Share Vancouver, a homeless outreach organization, helped to distribute pieces of the cake car after the drive was finished.

I'd say that beats the hairiest car record any day of the week.

High Country Baking: The lemon rosemary bundt cake that will elevate everything you serve it with - Vail Daily News

foody.indah.link

High altitudes make cookies spread in the pan, cakes fall, and few baked goods turn out as they do at sea level. This twice-monthly column, published on Thursdays, presents recipes and tips that make baking in the mountains successful.

I like a pastry that rises to any occasion, like this one. After dinner, glazed and accompanied by blueberry sauce and fresh berries, it’s a dessert. Present it plain at breakfast, and it’s a sweet bread. Its tender texture and citrusy goodness shine whenever you serve it and elevate whatever you serve with it.

It’s highly flexible and eager to please. Don’t have olive oil? Use a mild-flavored vegetable oil instead. Not sure about the rosemary? Reduce the amount or omit it altogether. Out of yogurt? Substitute sour cream or buttermilk. Feel free to increase the lemon to your liking, the amount in the recipe results in a mild flavor and add vanilla for a more complex taste. The Bundt needs to rest at least 24 hours before serving, so plan ahead.

Use a serrated knife to mince the rosemary, it will hold the tiny leaves in place while you’re chopping them, so they don’t spray all over your cutting surface.

Lemon-Rosemary-Olive Oil Bundt

Adjusted for elevations of 8,000 feet and above

Make in a 6-cup non-stick Bundt pan

After dinner, glazed and accompanied by blueberry sauce and fresh berries, this lemon, rosemary and olive oil Bundt is a dessert. Present it plain at breakfast, and it’s a sweet bread.
Photo by Vera Dawson / High Country Baking

Cake

1 ½ cups plus 3 tablespoons bleached all-purpose flour (spoon and level)

Scant (a little less than) 1 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch salt

2 teaspoons dried or 3-4 teaspoons fresh rosemary, minced

3/4 cup superfine granulated sugar

Finely grated zest of 1 (one) lemon or ¼ teaspoon lemon oil

3 large or jumbo eggs, room temperature

½ cup plain whole milk yogurt

½ cup plus 1 teaspoon mildly flavored extra virgin olive oil

Lemon Glaze, optional

1-3 tablespoons cream

1-3 teaspoons lemon juice or ¼ teaspoon lemon oil

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

½ teaspoon vanilla extract, optional

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, with a rack in the center. Generously grease the pan, including the center tube, with a baking spray that contains flour.

2. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and rosemary in a bowl and whisk to mix well. Set aside.

3. Add the sugar and lemon zest or lemon oil to a medium mixing bowl and use your clean fingertips to rub them together until the sugar absorbs some of the lemon and the citrus smell is evident. Whisk in the eggs, one at a time, then add the yogurt and whisk again, until well blended. Gently use the whisk or a silicone spatula to fold in the olive oil. Add the flour mixture, a little at a time, gently folding it into the batter until it’s absorbed after each addition. Check the bowl bottom and sides to make sure all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

4. Scrape the shiny, thick batter into the prepared pan, filling it no more than two inches from the top, even if you have some batter left over. Bake until a tester inserted in several places comes out clean and the baked batter starts to pull away from the pan sides. Start checking at 27 minutes. Cool in the pan on a rack for about 15 minutes, invert the pan and let the cake fall out. Let it cool completely on a rack and then cover well. Store at cool room temperature or in the ‘fridge for 24 hours before serving. It can be frozen successfully.

5. To glaze: When the cake has cooled completely, place a tablespoon of cream and a teaspoon of lemon juice or a few drops of lemon oil in a small bowl, add ½ cup confectioners’ sugar and whisk until smooth and blended. Add more sugar, lemon juice/ oil, and/or cream, a little at a time, whisking after each addition, until you have about ½-cup of glaze. It should be opaque, thick, but still pourable, and have a lemon flavor that’s pleasing to you. Drizzle it over the cake top and let it run down the sides. Let the glaze set before storing the cake (see #4).

Dish's Dave Mayo talks about 'audacious' effort to deploy greenfield 5G network - FierceWireless

foody.indah.link

Dave Mayo, Dish Networks’ EVP of network development, took the job with Dish about nine months ago because he sees it as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to help build a new greenfield 5G network in the United States.

Not only is the company undertaking a herculean task to build an infrastructure-based network across the vast United States, but it needs to do it on an incredibly tight time-line. As part of its commitments pursuant the Sprint/T-Mobile/Dish deal, it’s promised to cover 20% of the U.S. population by June 2022, and at least 70% of the population by mid-2023.

Dave Mayo
Dave Mayo

Mayo previously was at T-Mobile for 23 years where he last served as senior vice president for 5G and IoT. At Dish he’s responsible for the company’s wireless buildout strategy and deployment of the nation's first standalone 5G network. He called the company’s ambitions and time-line “audacious.”

Since joining Dish he’s had three top priorities: establishing a team; developing radio designs; and striking deals with tower companies.

The first task was to hire the necessary talent at the top levels and create a geographically dispersed team. He recently announced the hiring of four regional vice presidents to lead the network buildout in their respective regions.

Those hires include:

  • Satish Sharma, regional VP for the West Region. Sharma’s held leadership roles at Sprint and Ericsson.
  • Nichole Thomas, regional VP for the Central Region. She’s had leadership positions at Sprint, Ericsson and SAC Wireless.
  • Bill Watson, regional VP for the South Region. Watson has most recently been with Mastec Network Solutions, a specialty construction services provider.
  • Mike McGovern, regional VP for the Northeast Region. McGovern was most recently regional VP with SAC Wireless, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nokia that helps customers design, build and upgrade cellular networks.

Mayo said these VPs are now assembling their own teams, hiring development managers and RF managers.

Tower deals

The company’s made a number of tower announcements lately. It’s got a deal with Vertical Bridge to use that company’s portfolio of 300,000 sites, consisting of a variety of towers and other vertical infrastructure.

It’s got a deal with Crown Castle to lease up to 20,000 of its towers. And recently it struck a deal with SBA, but it didn’t name how many towers it might lease from that company.

Mayo said it’s in Dish’s best interest to work with a variety of tower companies, partly because it wants choices of infrastructure to deploy its radio designs.

Notably, Dish has not yet struck a tower deal with American Tower. But Mayo said, “We’re actively talking to American Tower. Stay tuned.”

And on yesterday’s American Tower earnings call its President and CEO Tom Bartlett said that it expects to get its fair share of business from Dish. “We stand ready to support Dish,” Bartlett said. “We know the teams well.”

Recently, SBA struck a deal to lease electric utility towers from Pacific Gas & Electric. Asked if Dish has any interest in using this kind of tower infrastructure, Mayo said, “We’ll choose everything under the sun imaginable to get antennas up in the air in the most expeditious fashion, which may include in some markets use of electrical towers.”

The company has already begun deploying 5G on a handful of towers, primarily on a test basis. It anticipates launching a commercial market in the third quarter, but it won’t divulge the location of that market. Dish’s headquarters is in Denver, and Mayo said, “Clearly our plan is to have a geography in Colorado in the first 10 states.”

Radio design

Mayo’s third priority was to develop radio designs for Dish’s network. “We had to get everything going, like immediately,” he said.

Dish has two vendors, so far, that are supplying radios for its open radio access network (RAN): Fujitsu and MTI. The radios from these vendors will run software from Altiostar.

In December Dish said that it conducted a test at its fully-virtualized standalone 5G core network in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In that test it integrated and validated end-to-end 5G connections using the industry's first O-RAN compliant FDD radio, developed by Taiwan-based MTI.

RELATED: Dish’s Ergen reflects on transitions, looks to 'execute' in 2021

Dish is deploying its 5G network on its existing mid-band and low-band spectrum, much of this in the 600 MHz and AWS frequencies. The company also bid heavily in the recent CBRS auction. It won the most priority access licenses, garnering 5,492 PALs.

In terms of the CBRS spectrum, Mayo said, “We’re actually pretty jazzed about that. We acquired nationwide licenses for CBRS. We think there’s lot of benefits. We’re looking at a whole list of things.”

Pulling it all together

It was important for Dish to get radio designs and tower deals done quickly because the commitment to cover at least 70% of the population by mid-2023 looms. Mayo said some big markets like New York City, Los Angeles and Miami can take much longer for site access and development than other markets.

Dish Scores $16.8M Payday Over Pirated Content - Law360

foody.indah.link
Law360 (February 26, 2021, 4:05 PM EST) -- A Texas federal judge granted Dish Network's request for a $16.8 million payday from an individual it claims runs a host of websites that illegally provide access to content that is exclusively licensed to Dish for distribution.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Gray H. Miller sided with the television provider in request for default judgment in its case against Nauman Khalid — who allegedly owned and operated 15 websites that provided users with links to unauthorized streams of channels Dish had exclusive licensing agreements for. These channels included Al Jazeera Arabic News, India Today and others.

According to the judge, Dish...

ADT announces partnership with DISH Network - SecurityInfoWatch

foody.indah.link

ADT and DISH Network Corporation on Tuesday announced a partnership whereby DISH will begin marketing, sales and installation services for ADT smart home security products.

As part of the partnership, customers of DISH, which has more than 20 million subscribers across its pay-TV and wireless brands nationwide, will receive access to ADT products and services sold and installed by DISH’s network of smart home professionals. OnTech Smart Services, a subsidiary of DISH, will also serve as an installation provider.

“Our partnership with DISH significantly extends ADT’s reach to bring more innovative smart home security solutions to millions of existing and potential subscribers,” ADT President and CEO Jim DeVries said in a statement. “This complementary agreement with an industry leader represents yet another channel to further expand ADT’s subscriber base.”

“Americans are spending more time at home this year than ever before, and entertainment, access to information, and the safety and well-being of their families and loved ones are at the forefront of their minds,” said Brian Neylon, EVP and Group President of DISH TV. “We are always looking for ways to add value for our customers, and ADT’s home security products and services are the perfect pairing to our current smart home and entertainment technology offerings from DISH and OnTech.”

The DISH partnership continues ADT’s improved growth trajectory, following Google’s $450 million equity investment in the company last fall and the recently announced partnership with Ackerman Security Systems.

What Is the Cake Check Challenge on TikTok All About? Get the Scoop - Distractify

foody.indah.link

There’s reason to believe that TikTok is slowly taking over the social media world. Since the debut of the app, users have been creating short-form videos on almost every topic you can think of. From household hacks and dance challenges to activities for pets and self-affirmation trends, the possibilities are endless.

It seems that every day, there's a new TikTok trend or challenge to try, and now, the Cake Check Challenge is gaining traction. While your first thought may be of the dance challenge that complements Rihanna’s hit song “Birthday Cake,” this time around it’s all about focusing on your derriere. Here’s everything we know about the challenge.

So, what does the Cake Check Challenge on TikTok entail?

In case you missed the memo, “cake” is a slang term for someone with a nice butt. If you’re thinking of an actual cake that you can eat, you’re a little off base. We’ve seen many musicians reference cake in their songs and celebs use the term as well to describe their rear ends. And now it has taken over the TikTok world.

While most people believe that you can look at someone’s behind and tell what they’re working with, TikTok creators have come up with another solution. And it involves getting a little active in the gym.

Article continues below advertisement

The Cake Check Challenge consists of someone lying face down on the floor as a barbell with heavy weights rolls above your body. The goal is to see if the barbell actually rolls above your body undisturbed or if it stops because of your bum.

Many creators are pairing their videos with Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” track, Flo Rida’s and 99 Percent’s “Cake,” Erica Bank's "Buss It," or the classic track by Bad Gyal RiRi.

Once the barbell stops, the consensus is that you clearly have a big butt. On the flip side, if it rolls straight over you without stopping, you have a small butt.

While the trend seems to be pretty silly, both men and women are getting in on the fun. Groups of guys have been uploading videos in droves and are making it an actual competition. The trend has already garnered 25.8 million views on TikTok.

The Cake Check Challenge has arguably become one of the biggest gym phenomenons.

It’s not news that once a TikTok challenge gains some traction, it’s only a matter of time before you see it everywhere. And with creators of all ages and sizes getting in on the fun, it's safe to say that the Cake Check Challenge is a phenomenon. It's also influencing people to head to the gym, which is always a plus.

And TikTokers @TheHockeyGuys are one of many leading the charge. Their Cake Check Challenge video already has almost 233,000 views. And it’s being debated that the guys are trying to prove that hockey players have great butts.

Another TikTok account, @TheBoyz_Tok, is also showing what they’re working with. While it’s still a guess on whether or not the boys are trying to grow bigger bums, the craze is getting the attention of users.

And the videos keep on coming. We're seeing creators of all ages jumping on the bandwagon. And while some people are using big weights, some are switching things up in size.

It seems like we can definitely expect this challenge to continue growing. Pop culture has become infatuated with big behinds and the Cake Check Challenge is adding to the conversation.

Cloquet woman's cake kits spread cheer to food shelf - Duluth News Tribune

foody.indah.link

The Cloquet woman started building and distributing cake kits at the start of the year to ensure area children could celebrate their birthdays with something sweet during the pandemic.

She recently donated 40 birthday boxes to the Cloquet Salvation Army, and she had ample donations to make more.

Kovach works in the social services sector, and she saw a need, as celebratory items aren’t often included in typical food shelf donations.

“Because they need a food shelf, does that mean they don’t deserve a birthday cake on their birthday? We don’t think to donate these things because these aren’t things we don’t get,” she said.

READ MORE sweet stories from the Duluth News Tribune:

One cake kit costs about $10 and includes a box of mix, cake pans from the dollar store, a can of soda (a substitute for eggs and oil), a container of frosting, sprinkles, candles and sometimes decorations such as paper streamers.

She posted her efforts on Facebook, and it “blew up,” she said.

People have donated full kits, individual items, or they’ve donated to her Venmo account; Kovach has received more than $500 to make more.

“It did not start out as a huge thing. I just wanted to make a difference for a couple kids,” she said.

It’s important to her to show her children, ages 8, 5 and 2, the importance of giving back to the community, so she has included them in the process. “The 2-year-old likes putting cans of pop in them. We have to make sure they only have one can of pop instead of 10.”

Asked how to support her efforts, Kovach said, “I don’t have to be the end-all, be-all facilitator of it. I wanted to get the idea out.

“They’re so easy to make. … It’s so needed now.”

Ally Kovach

Ally Kovach

Q: What’s your favorite cake flavor?

A: My favorite cake flavor is German chocolate with the coconut frosting.

Q: How did you celebrate birthdays growing up, and how do you celebrate it with your children?

A: Growing up, my family always made birthdays a big deal, even if we didn't have much. My parents let me pick wherever I wanted to go out to eat for dinner and order whatever I wanted. I even got dessert.

I don't remember the gifts or the parties, but I remember sitting across the table at Grizzly’s eating potato skins with my family every year, and it became an important tradition.

I wanted to provide that same special memory for my kids. We only get so many birthdays with them before they want to do their own thing.

Each (normal) year, we let the kids pick one special thing they want to do as a family. Usually, that looks like the trampoline park or the arcade, but it's a time that we make sure to stop worrying about what is going on around us and focus on what's right in front of us.

Q: You’ve involved your kiddos in these cake kits. What have been their takeaways?

A: Giving back has always been important to me, and I want to instill that in my kids too, so they have been involved in a lot of community projects as they have grown up, and they take a lot of pride in being able to contribute.

On a material level, they have really loved putting the baskets together and curating stories about the kids who would receive them and what sort of things they would like in their baskets. It makes them really consider people outside of themselves, and that is what I really want them to do at this age.

Q: What are your takeaways?

A: This past year has been hard. Between the pandemic, people losing jobs, the political climate, everything — 2020 was just really hard on everyone regardless of your situation.

I really think for a long time I was so focused on the worst in people. Social media was plastered with hatred and negativity, and it's all I could see.

I started doing this just to feel like I was contributing to something “good” in a sea of “bad,” but what I found was that there was so much more good out there that I hadn't been paying attention to.

People want to be good, and they want to be kind, and sometimes it's so easy to get sucked into the negativity that we forget we are all human beings and we just need to be kind.

When we spend all of our time and energy trying to decide who is right and who is wrong, we forget what matters. Seeing the response this project brought out in people made me see that I live in a community of people who truly do care about their neighbors.

Q: What does a birthday cake symbolize?

A: This year, it symbolizes a sense of normalcy and equity.

It doesn't matter if you are young or old, rich or poor, white or a person of color — everyone loves a slice of birthday cake on their birthday. It shows that someone cared enough to either bake or get you that cake, that they thought about you on your birthday.

Everyone deserves cake.

Q: What does your work in social services communicate about our needs in the Northland?

A: I think growing up I was very privileged to not understand the impact of hunger, homelessness and marginalization in our community. Through my education and now my work in nonprofits, I have been made much more aware of the system shortcomings that leave populations of people forgotten.

I know that as one person I cannot single-handedly fix systems to better serve the people who need it, but I can make small changes to support the people that I come in contact with and help where I can. It all starts with one small change at a time.

Q: Tips for others who may want to help.

A: Our community has so many needs, big and small, and even little acts of kindness and helpfulness stack up. See a need, any need, and brainstorm ways that you can help to make a difference to the people affected by that lack of resources.

If you don't have money to donate, consider volunteering your time with a community organization. If you don't have time, consider becoming involved in social media movements. There are so many things people can do to promote positive impacts, and it all starts with the desire to want to help.

Q: You can (safely) dine with three people, alive or dead. Who are they and why?

A: Brene Brown. I sound like a complete social work student with this one, but since watching her first TED talk, I've been completely wrapped up in every word she said. I listen to her podcasts, and she has such a deep connection with why people think and feel and act the way they do. I want to be as kind and empathetic and understanding as Brene Brown when I grow up.

Former President Barack Obama. Despite where people sit on the political spectrum, it's impossible to say that Obama wasn't influential and an inspiration. He laid the groundwork for really progressive policies to work against systemic oppression, and we could all learn a lot from him.

Ellen DeGeneres. I think she is hilarious, influential, and overall empathetic and kind.

DISH, SBA ink long-term lease agreement - Connected Real Estate Magazine

foody.indah.link

DISH and SBA Communications Corporation announced a new long-term master lease agreement this week. The deal will grant DISH access to SBA’s extensive nationwide portfolio of wireless communication sites, the company said in a release. Agreement details weren’t made to the public. SBA owns and operates wireless communications infrastructure for towers, buildings, rooftops, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and small cells.

The announcement builds on DISH’s continued progress in acquiring access to the infrastructure it needs to deploy its greenfield 5G network across the United States. DISH will lease towers from SBA as part of the agreement. Additionally, SBA is expected to deliver numerous pre-construction functions that range from site acquisition to regulatory and compliance services.

“With experience spanning more than thirty years, SBA brings a valuable team and portfolio to our infrastructure mix,” Dave Mayo, DISH Executive Vice President of Network Development said in a statement. “This agreement provides DISH with access to key real estate that will help advance our rapid 5G network deployment across the U.S.”

“We are excited to expand our partnership with DISH in their efforts to build out a nationwide wireless 5G network,” Jeff Stoops, SBA’s President and Chief Executive Officer said in a release. “We believe the quality of our assets and our long history of working closely with DISH will allow us to be a key support to them in their 5G network deployment.”

DISH’s recent agreement with SBA follows deals made with major tower companies Crown Castle and Vertical Bridge, Inside Towers reports. The Crown Castle offer includes 20,000 macro towers and its fiber services. Meanwhile, Vertical Bridge will provide locations on 300,000 sites. DISH also made additional lease agreements with seven independent tower companies that included Harmoni Towers, Parallel Infrastructure and Phoenix Tower International, which were announced last week. These deals added 4,000 macro sites as prospective locations for the company’s 5G network buildout and are expected to help accelerate DISH’s 5G radio installation on its newly-acquired infrastructure.

“Securing strong tower partners is a key component of any network expansion, and is tremendously important for DISH’s rapid roll-out of a new, nationwide 5G network,” Mayo said. “Each of these new tower partners will play an important role in bringing our network to life, connecting next-generation wireless service to American consumers and enterprises.”

“With the CBRS and C-band auctions now a reality in the U.S., our recently-announced master agreement with DISH, and important spectrum auctions planned for our international markets over the next two years, we believe we are on the cusp of another increase in operational activity and demand for our infrastructure likely to begin in the second half of 2021, and continue for years thereafter,” Stoops said.

DISH’s agreement with SBA comes at an ideal time in the new network buildout Gaining access to SBA’s vast communication sites portfolio could also help DISH meet its Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-mandated deadline of having its network cover at least 70% of the U.S. population by June 2023. This provision was put in place to help maintain competitive balance in the wireless industry when the T-Mobile and Sprint merger was approved last April.
