Game Show Network Restored to Dish, Sling TV After Three-Week Blackout - Variety

foody.indah.link

Game on! Dish Network and Sony Pictures Entertainment resolved their carriage dispute over Game Show Network, returning GSN to Dish’s satellite TV and Sling TV services.

Game Show Network had gone dark on Dish and Sling TV on Sept. 6, after the two sides had failed to come to terms after eight months of negotiations.

“We’re pleased to have reached a multiyear agreement that benefits all parties, especially our customers,” said Brian Neylon, EVP and group president at Dish TV, in a statement. “I want to thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we worked through the negotiations.”

Tim Carry, EVP of distribution for Game Show Network, said, “We are happy to have entered into a long-term agreement with Dish and that Dish customers can resume watching their favorite shows on Game Show Network for years to come.”

Following the blackout this month of GSN on Dish’s platforms, Sony Pictures had complained that “Dish is choosing to do this to Game Show Network, an independent network, that costs virtually nothing compared to local retransmission or sports networks.” Dish alleged that Sony Pictures had demanded the removal of Game Show Network from the lineups as a negotiating tactic.

Shows that air on GSN include “Family Feud,” “The $100,000 Pyramid,” “People Puzzler,” “Deal or No Deal,” “The Match Game,” “Cash Cab,” “Master Minds” and “America Says.”

In 2019, Sony Pictures Entertainment bought out AT&T’s 42% stake in Game Show Network for about $500 million, making the network wholly owned by SPE.

As of June 30, Dish had 7.79 million satellite TV subscribers (down 9% year over year) and 2.20 million Sling TV subscribers (down 10% year over year).

Dish Network and DirecTV: Is a Merger Still Possible? - 19FortyFive

foody.indah.link

Dish Network and DirecTV Merger Less Likely to Happen (at Least This Year): Earlier this year, media analysts had seen a potential merger between satellite TV operators Dish Network and rival DirecTV as practically inevitable – and also necessary for the respective companies to survive in the era of cord cutting. However, some analysts also noted that the synergy opportunities have declined as well.

In other words, the feeling back in January was that it was “now or never,” and even as it is increasingly looking like it could happen, the issue is simply when.

“We believe the regulatory risks today are not high given the state of the Pay TV market. Frankly, if [Dish Network Chairman Charlie] Ergen can’t get it announced this year, it might never happen,” wrote Lightshed analyst Rich Greenfield, at the start of the year.

That Was Then…

Though the merger buzz has been ongoing for decades, and the two pay-TV services did actually try to merge in 2002 – only to be rejected by federal regulators on the grounds that it would reduce video options for consumers – the talk of a team-up has escalated in recent years as both Dish and DirecTV have been losing customers. Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen had repeatedly said a merger was “inevitable” as the market simply can’t support two satellite services.

The combining of Dish and DirecTV would allow the combined company to more effectively compete against existing cable TV services, while better existing in the new streaming era. In recent years it had seemed that regulators might be far more open to such a merger – especially given that AT&T was able to purchase DirecTV (only to spin it off), while the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint was also approved.

That has changed a bit, however, since President Biden took office in January 2021, and the current climate might not favor such a merger. Though Ergen continues to believe that such a merger could happen, last month he told reporters that the issue is the midterm elections. A second failed merger bid certainly wouldn’t make a third a possibility, so Ergen has said he is cautiously optimistic.

“On DirecTV…I’d say the same thing,” Ergen told reporters. “We think that’s inevitable, but I do think you’re close enough to the election today that I think regulatory is your biggest risk. And I think you’d wait and see which way the wind is blowing and you’re going to know that in the next couple of months.”

DoJ and FCC Approval Needed

The Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) each need to sign off on the proposed merger. Under the Biden Administration, a merger could still be rejected for anti-competitive reasons – even in the era of streaming.

The Justice Department has pushed forward with aggressive enforcement of federal antitrust laws that officials say aim to ensure a fair and competitive market. Last November, the DoJ sued to block Penguin Random House’s acquisition of rival publisher Simon & Schuster, arguing that it would create a publishing behemoth that would harm authors and consumers. Likewise, the DoJ sued to try to halt a deal between U.S. Sugar and Imperial Sugar Company, which are two of the largest sugar refiners in the nation. The government had argued that allowing the acquisition to go through would be harmful to consumers and anti-competitive.

However, just on Monday, a federal judge rejected the Justice Department’s bid to block that latter “sweet deal,” which could clear the way for the acquisition to proceed. Yet, even as that deal might go forward, it would seem the DoJ is very much in an anti-merger mode.

Age of Satellites: What the Experts Told 19FortyFive

Moreover, DoJ approval of a Dish/DirecTV merger is the least of the problems facing a likely combination, said technology industry analyst Roger Entner of Recon Analytics.

“A key dependency is how quickly broadband gets built out in rural America,” Entner told 19FortyFive. “The faster the build out the less critical is competition for video services in rural areas.”

The age of the two companies’ satellites is also another factor that shouldn’t be understated, as each only has a lifespan of about 15 years.

“Most of their combined eleven satellites are more than 10 years old with an expected lifetime of 15 years,” he noted. “Do you really want to go through all the effort and expenditures to combine two companies with a product that has a limited shelf life and falling subscriber numbers? The benefits of merging get smaller by the day. Echostar XXIII the last satellite Dish was launched in 2017, giving them at least one satellite until 2032. Echostar XXIV was built in 2021 but has been not launched yet. The last DirecTV satellite launched in 2019.”

How to feast at The Colonnade Diner | The Dish - SILive.com

foody.indah.link

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Waitress Lois Donofrio and chef Emil Habaschi have presented countless meals at The Colonnade Diner in their collective decades of service. In this episode of The Dish, the two loyal employees picked their favorite meals to show off with some customer favorites and speciality Greek eats.

But overall, top tastes consistently, say the chef and Lois, are the 8-ounce burger with fries, and a Grilled Chicken salad with kalamata olives, creamy feta plus greens with roasted pita points. If a patron wants to get a little heartier, the kitchen presents pan-fried, whole flounder and platters of meaty lamb chops with sides of fried potatoes and broccoli rabe.

The Colonnade

Lois Donofrio has been a server at The Colonnade for 34 years.(Staten Island Advance/Pamela Silvestri)

Breakfast is tremendous, says Lois. On a weekend, to serve hundreds of pancakes — including fruit stuffed versions — and omelets is an understatement.

How does the restaurant handle such volume?

Lois explains the diner format where the server is truly on the front line. She recalls her days at Toto’s Restaurant, formerly of New Dorp Lane, where the role of a waiter or waitress was to bring only the food to guests. At The Colonnade, among other things, a waiter or waitress must ladle the soup, roast the toast and portion the pickles with diner’s famed creamy cole slaw. Yes, it’s quite a bit of extra work compared to a traditional sit-down restaurant. But Lois wouldn’t have it any way.

Check out this episode of The Dish, a live broadcast that streams from the Advance’s Facebook page each Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Come into The Colonnade’s sparkly kitchen to see where the cooking and assembly action happens. By other spaces in comparison that we’ve viewed together on The Dish, it’s pretty massive back there!

By the way, gone at The Colonnade are 24-hour days. Service times now are 7 a.m. to midnight daily at 2001 Hylan Boulevard.

The restaurant is owned by Marko Platis, established in 1975. It seats about 300 guests and features a private party room plus an outdoor area called Santorini Grill. The al fresco section is named as such as a nod to Platis’ hometown in Greece.

Dish: SpaceX Request for Mobile Starlink Service a 'Lawless, Pirate Application' - PCMag

foody.indah.link

SpaceX's plan to offer a Starlink service for mobile users is facing resistance from Dish Network, which is demanding the FCC reject the company’s application for the necessary radio spectrum.

On Thursday, Dish Network sent a terse one-page filing(Opens in a new window) to the FCC, objecting to SpaceX's request to access the 2GHz radio band to power the mobile Starlink service.

“Any such evaluation need only be brief. This is a lawless, pirate application. The Commission should dismiss it without accepting it for filing,” Dish said. In addition, the company wants to participate in all FCC proceedings about the matter.

Back in July, when SpaceX requested access to the 2GHz band, it noted that Dish is currently licensed to use the radio spectrum, but claimed “there is scant evidence” that the company is actually using it for mobile satellite service purposes.

“While Dish is authorized to deploy a terrestrial network operating in this band, the limited reach of its long-promised network will leave large portions of the country completely unserved by 2GHz operations,” SpaceX added.

Elon Musk's company plans on using the 2GHz spectrum so that the mobile Starlink service can receive data from satellites orbiting the planet. The goal is to deliver “next-gen” communication services to cellular dead zones.

However, Dish told the FCC it plans on using the 2GHz band for its own ground-based 5G cellular network. The company also claims SpaceX is breaking regulatory rules by requesting the 2GHz radio spectrum access.

“The so-called modification request also seeks authority to provide a brand new service – Mobile-Satellite Service, even as the Starlink system only has authority to provide Fixed Satellite Service,” Dish argues. “What is more, the new authority being requested would contravene almost all of the Commission’s long-settled and well-considered rules governing the 2GHz band.”

Recommended by Our Editors

The brewing regulatory battle risks slowing deployment of a Starlink mobile service, especially if the FCC rules against SpaceX. Both companies are already locked in a bitter dispute over Dish’s effort to use the 12GHz band for its cellular network.

It doesn’t help that Dish Network isn’t the only company opposing SpaceX’s spectrum push for the mobile Starlink service. Last week, Globalstar—which is powering the emergency satellite connectivity feature in the iPhone 14—also told the FCC to reject SpaceX’s request for the spectrum access, but for the 1.6GHz and 2.4GHz bands.

SpaceX plans on using both bands to receive and transmit data over the mobile Starlink service. However, Globalstar is urging the FCC to deny the application over concerns it’ll generate interference when it's already using the same 1.6/2.4GHz bands for its own satellite communication services.

Hashweh: The Traditional Palestinian Dish You Should Know About - Tasting Table

foody.indah.link

Odds are, if you are a fan of Bedouin-style cuisine, you've heard of hashweh before. Hashweh translates to "stuffing" in Arabic, which gives you a good idea of where this dish comes from and what it is (via New York Times Cooking). When Westerners, especially Americans, think of stuffing, they usually imagine an herbaceous bread and butter mix meant for holidays. While hashweh is a fantastic dish to indulge in on celebratory occasions, it is not the Thanksgiving stuffing most of us are familiar with in the states.

Hashweh is a rice-based stuffing mixed with meat and spices, though exact recipes vary by country. According to Serious Eats, it is typically used to stuff an animal, often a whole lamb, with rice, even more meat, and pine nuts. The stuffing itself can be easily prepared and eaten solo for a quicker, simpler meal. Hashweh is very popular throughout the Arab world, including Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and many more (via 196 Flavors).

Tomato Choka: The Caribbean Veggie Dish You Should Know - Tasting Table

foody.indah.link

Depending on the base ingredient, each type of choka is prepared using an infusion of different seasonings, herbs, and hot peppers (via On The Gas). However, one consistency across choka recipes is its signature smoky flavor because every variety was originally prepared by roasting the vegetables over an open flame. While this is still the preferred way to prepare it, there are certainly ways to recreate the charred taste in your tomato choka by using your grill.

Tomato choka is made using its own distinct blend of seasonings, herbs, and, of course, hot peppers. The dish begins with a mix of tomatoes, garlic, thyme, cilantro, sweet onions, and either jalapenos or scotch bonnet peppers (via Thrillist, On The Gas). Chef Anya Peters told Thrillist that preparing choka is as simple as charring tomatoes over an open fire or coals, smashing them into a blend of seasonings, and garnishing the mixture with a dash of acid and fresh cilantro.

After prepping your tomatoes, place them on a hot grill them until their skin has wrinkled and charred. While they're roasting, grind the other ingredients together using a mortar and pestle. Then, peel and discard the tomato skins, add the flesh to the other ingredients, and crush everything into a thick stew consistency. Season with salt, pepper, and lime juice, and add some olive oil to a saucepan over high heat. When it's nearly smoking, pour it over the crushed tomatoes, mix, and garnish with fresh cilantro.

Judge Decides Peloton, Lululemon Infringed DISH Network Patents - Front Office Sports

foody.indah.link

A U.S. International Trade Commission judge has sided with DISH Network in a case alleging that Peloton, iFit, and Lululemon’s Mirror infringed on patents.

DISH Network filed the complaint in April 2021 against the companies for infringing on streaming technology through workout equipment from August 2016 to March 2021.

  • Peloton offers connected stationary bikes and other equipment.
  • iFit, previously known as ICON Health & Fitness, owns connected fitness manufacturer NordicTrack.
  • Lululemon bought connected fitness brand Mirror for $500 million in 2020.

“Customers of these products could just as easily exercise in front of their existing television — in particular, a television that is lawfully using the technology of the Asserted Patents,” DISH Network stated.

DISH Network previously requested that the ITC ban the equipment from entering the U.S. The next week, it filed three other patent infringement lawsuits dealing with the same patents. Those were all stayed last year pending the ITC’s investigation.

The initial determination filing didn’t include the decision’s reasoning, and the initial final determination remains sealed.

Patent Problems

The fitness companies have also been sued by each other.

Peloton — whose CEO stepped down on Monday — and iFit previously sued each other for patent infringement. iFit requested that the U.S. International Trade Commission block the import of Peloton’s Bike+ devices.

In May, the companies settled all ongoing litigation. iFit removed some on-demand leaderboard technology from its offerings, and Peloton agreed to license iFit patents dealing with remote control technology.

The Regal Dinner Dish That Brings The Royal Family Together - Mashed

foody.indah.link

In 2017, Chef Enrico Derflingher shared experiences from his time working in Kensington Palace serving the British royal family with Country Living U.K. Derflingher says he worked for the royal family from 1987 through 1990. And during that time, he identified one dish that was a hit with the whole crowd.

According to Derflingher, it was a shrimp risotto that was given the name of Queen Victoria Risotto. Derflingher described it as being composed of Sicilian red shrimps, parmesan, herbs, and Italian sparkling wine. He also shared in the Country Living U.K. interview that anyone who wanted to try it could do so at the L'Orangerie restaurant, which, according to Trip Advisor, is in Paris. The dish's name is an homage to Queen Victoria, who Biography says reigned over Britain from 1837 through 1901. This creamy rice and seafood dish isn't the only cuisine beloved by the royals, though.

Today shared in 2018 that various members of the royal family love foods like sticky toffee pudding, chocolate biscuit cake, and pizza. PopSugar adds that baby back ribs and roasted chicken have made frequent occurrences on royal tables in the family as well. While it's uncertain where Queen Victoria Risotto ranks for the royal family's absolute favorite dish in comparison to these others, there's no doubt it's somewhere on the list.

Lasagna Napoletana Is The Ultra-Decadent Dish You Need To Know About - Tasting Table

foody.indah.link

Given that making lasagna napoletana can be quite lengthy, it's wise to start the sauce the day before. A slow simmer of onions, garlic, basil, chunks of pork and sausages, a splash of wine, and crushed, whole tomatoes allows incredible flavor to develop, reports Serious Eats. But, that's not the only thing that must be done in advance. Before assembling the lasagna, Italy Magazine explains that the mini meatballs must be shaped and fried, in addition to slicing, chopping, and grating the other ingredients — even the pasta might need to parboiled if you aren't using fresh sheets.

Once everything is prepped, the layering process can begin. Great Italian Chefs recommends spreading sauce on the base before adding the first layer of pasta, which then can be topped with ricotta, cubed cheese, meatballs, salami, eggs, and sauce. Although you could also alternate between meat and cheese layers, there should be a total of about five layers, before adding a final bit of sauce and cheese and baking for roughly 30 minutes.

Dish Network Refreshes Its Set-Top Game with Google-Powered 'Hopper Plus' - Next TV

foody.indah.link

Dish Network's Hopper 3 was the most powerful pay TV set-top on the market when it was introduced back in January 2016, supporting simultaneous HD recording of 16 shows, Wi-Fi capability and access to popular OTT services including Netflix and YouTube.

Now serving about half as many satellite TV subscribers as it did back in those relatively halcyon days -- just under 7.8 million as of the end of Q2 -- Dish has refreshed its Hopper 3 "customer premises equipment" (CPE) with a 4K/UHD-capable, Android TV-powered streaming box designed to sit atop of the main hard disk, the Hopper Plus. Dish has also added two new 4K "Joey" client device models to handle TVs in other rooms.

The 4K-capable Hopper Plus connects to the Hopper 3 via USB-C cable and displaces the Hopper 3's connection with the living room smart TV or other primary display unit with its own HDMI 2 interface. It essentially replaces the DVR unit as the "brains," providing 16 gigabytes of digital storage, access to more than 6,000 apps via Google Play, Google Stadia gaming, improved Google Assistant capability, a new homepage and Dolby Atmos support.

The Hopper 3 continues to spin, piping in live TV and DVR content via all expensive-to-replace tuners and hard drive storage, but the new UX is delivered by the Hopper Plus -- at least that's how it appears to work to us.

Dish has also upgraded the client devices to 4K with the Joey 4, which comes in both wired MoCA and wireless ethernet iterations.

"Hopper Plus is the next evolution of our award-winning whole-home DVR system and delivers an industry-leading viewing experience," said Brian Neylon, Dish TV group president. "It offers convenience for our customers to do more in one place, accessing their favorite live TV, streaming services and smart-home technologies all from their Dish Home screen."

Tartiflette: The Cheesy French Potato Dish You Should Know - Tasting Table

foody.indah.link

According to the New York Times you can use another soft cow's milk cheese like a brie or camembert in lieu of the Reblochon, which is currently unable to be imported to the U.S. If you break the rules and use brie or camembert, don't worry, your secret is safe with us. One of the main characteristics of Reblochon cheese is that it's a soft cow's milk cheese with a rind on it, per Serious Eats so as long as you've got another similar, tasty cow's milk cheese then you're all set to make tartiflette at home.

The recipe itself is very similar to potatoes au gratin. It starts by crisping up some bacon in a pan and then adding onion with herbs and aromatics like thyme and nutmeg. Then the potatoes are added with a bit of white wine and cooked down until they're softer. Then crĂšme fraĂźche and the cows' milk cheese are added, and the pan is transferred to the oven to bake. Once you're digging in, you'll be so happy you won't even care that you've bent the rules by using a different cheese.

Game Show Network Goes Dark On Dish Amid Carriage Dispute - Deadline

foody.indah.link

Sony Pictures TV-owned Game Show Network is no longer available on Dish after the two companies could not reach a new carriage agreement following eight months of negotiations.

As is the case in virtually any carriage dispute, the two parties issued dueling statements highlighting their position in the standoff and pointing fingers at the other side, with Dish claiming that their “goal and priority is to reach a fair agreement to bring this channel back as quickly as possible.”

Here is GSN’s statement followed by that by Dish.

Game Show Network tried to get a deal done with DISH, but after eight months of negotiations we could not agree to their demands. Most recently, DISH’s removal of channels has been focused on local retransmission or regional sports networks (Tegna, Sinclair, Block Communications, AT&T Sportsnet, Root Sportsnet, NBC Regional Sports Networks, among others.) DISH is choosing to do this to Game Show Network, an independent network, that costs virtually nothing compared to local retransmission or sports networks.

These Reusable Swedish Dishcloths Are on Sale at Amazon - PEOPLE

foody.indah.link

Household chores can be tasking — but sometimes, all it takes is a minor upgrade to the products you use to lessen your daily burden.

For instance, you may want to consider swapping out the paper towels and sponges for the customer-loved Swedish Wholesale Swedish Dish Cloths, which are reusable dishcloths currently on sale at Amazon.

These reusable dishcloths are Amazon best-sellers and have more than 34,000 five-star ratings. They're made from cellulose and cotton and are highly absorbent and durable. And unlike paper towels, you get many uses out of each cloth, which means they can help you minimize waste. Plus, the reusable dishcloths don't leave behind streaks or residue.

Multiple customers acknowledge the way this product has completely transformed their chore routines. One five-star reviewer said they "have yet to tear one even when cleaning around edges of the stove and the cooking grates on the gas stovetop," while another shopper claimed they "will never go back to cloth dish clothes, sponges, paper towels."

A pack of 10 would normally cost you $25, but they're currently marked down to $18. When you average it out, that means each cloth will cost you less than $2 apiece.

These cloths are multifunctional as well. When wet, they have a soft texture, allowing you to gently wash your counters, dishes, or anything else that needs to be scrubbed. But when they're dry, they have a rougher texture, allowing you to better scrub away those harder-to-remove stains. You can use the cloths on a range of materials, including glass, wood, marble, stainless steel, and tile. One reviewer noted they are "easy to clean up messy kitchen countertops and dishes with."

The Swedish Dish Cloths are quick to dry too, so you don't have to worry about them starting to smell. Their odor resistance has also earned them praise from shoppers: Sharing their personal experiences, a five-star reviewer wrote, "I have been using these for about a month and so far they do not smell." Another shopper said they love that the cloth's fast-drying feature "stops that icky mildew smell that cloths that take forever to dry often get."

Cleaning the clothes is an easy process, too, since you can just toss them in your washing machine or dishwasher, which customers say they love. And as if all their functional value wasn't enough, they're also available in various fun colors, including blue, yellow, and green.

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to make your cleaning routine more efficient, buy the Swedish Wholesale Swedish Dish Cloths while they're on sale for $18 at Amazon.

10 Worst Old-Fashioned Dishes That Should Never Make a Comeback — Eat This Not That - Eat This, Not That

foody.indah.link

There are so many comforting, classic old-fashioned meals we love, like beef stew, pot pie, and meatloaf, that we've been eating since childhood. While it's fun and delicious to recreate and tweak those classics, there are some worst old-fashioned dishes that should absolutely never, ever grace dinner tables ever again.

Whether they're unappetizing aspics or flavors and textures that just don't appeal to current tastes, the recipes of the past can be pretty wild. While your grandparents may not have made these dishes for you, they've definitely tried some of them. Would you actually try any of these?

Ham and Bananas Hollandaise
Reddit

The recipe is simple, just wrap bananas in ham, cover with creamy homemade hollandaise sauce and bake "until golden." But just because you can make something, doesn't mean you should because the contrast of mushy warm bananas and the sauce isn't something anyone should eat. Ever.

Tuna Ring
YouTube

This dish, created by the minds at Betty Crocker uses Bisquick mixed with canned tuna to make an unusual ring that is baked and served with a tuna cheese dip. Almost like a tuna melt baked into one dish, but we'd advise just sticking with a tuna melt.

Perfection Salad

You can't list unusual retro recipes without touching on gelatin salads, and this one is a perfect example. Shredded carrots, cabbage, celery, pimientos, and green peppers are enrobed in an apple juice flavored gelatin and left to set in a decorative mold.

This 1927 recipe takes aspic (a savory jelly made with meat stock, set in a mold, and used to contain pieces of meat, seafood, or eggs) to a place no one wanted it to go. The molded layers of gelatin, lobster, and shrimp appear to be ready to pop off the plate and chase you out of the house.

Jellied Tomato Refresher
Reddit

This dish hits the trifecta of tropes for an unusual old recipe: Odd use of gelatin, Weight Watchers and sounds like another dish, but not good. With tomatoes, gelatin, Worcester sauce, and beef broth this is like a jellied perversion of a Bloody Mary sans vodka.

Frankfurter Spectacular
Reddit

Another Weight Watchers classic, this dish sees hot dogs broiled and wrapped around a pineapple core, with pineapple, apples, carrots, and onions sauteed and served with. While we love the flavor of pineapple and ham, there's just way too much going on here!

Terrine of Garden Vegetables
Reddit

To be clear, we're not unilaterally anti-aspic, which is making a comeback in fine dining circles, but this version from the 70s that layers what appears to be almost every course from Thanksgiving dinner into a gelee just doesn't appeal. Maybe it's the fancy mold, maybe it's the layering of different textures, but don't do this with your leftovers.

Celery Victor
Wiki Commons

Is this a salad? Bundles of celery are boiled in beef bouillon, then topped with Italian salad dressing, in a dish that makes us glad we live in an era where roasting vegetables and making our own stock is how we get dinner done.

Pink Noodle Salad
Shutterstock

The recipe describes this cold dish of pureed tomatoes blended with French mustard, lemon, and heavy cream mixed with noodles and cubed ham as "something children enjoy." Make this for your kids and get back to us with their reactions, please.

Hearty Corned Beef Salad

This recipe is filed under "light and easy living," which sees corned beef, peppers, onions, and eggs folded into lemon-flavored gelatin, and molded. Served over mixed greens, this was apparently considered a salad. It's just very…brown.
