STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — When he came to the United States from Turkey at 27, Jordan Berber worked in a relative’s New Jersey pizzeria. With a few delivery-driving gigs for parlors on Staten Island plus more of the English language under his belt, an idea hatched for Rossville Delivery.
Now three years into the business, Rossville Delivery (RossvilleDelivery.com) has evolved into a marketplace for home and office party planners, brides, parents looking for edible kids’ crafts and the generally hungry. Berber said cookie and pastry platters from bakeries like Heartland Bagels of New Springville and Belli Baci Bakery of Tottenville have been massive successes as COVID fears ease. These plus fruit arrangements from Lucky Farms in Rossville are particularly popular for bereavements and as “comfort” gifts. Hot tickets also include dream cakes from Moretti’s in West Brighton, bread from Bruno’s NYC Bakery and rainbow cookies from Renato’s Pastry Shoppe of Port Richmond.
Shoppers who peruse the website can fill a virtual cart with specialty restaurant dishes, cakes, produce, groceries, desserts and do-it-yourself home food kits — all Richmond Country produced items — for next day delivery. There is no minimum order and payment can come by credit card, Venmo or cash at the door. Orders placed by 6 p.m. are delivered the following day, if so requested. On Staten Island, the window for door-to-door shipment is 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. In New Jersey, that slot would be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Berber begins shipments to Brooklyn in the last week of February. He recently expanded into the Garden State in specific towns — Edison, Old Bridge, Holmdale, Hazlet, Aberdeen, Matawan, Colts Neck, Red Bank, Middletown, Marlboro and Monroe. He finds that so many Staten Islanders have moved to these areas that the demand for product from the former borough is constant.

“We have people who miss the New York bread, bagels and the Italian pastries. Maybe it’s the water but the items produced on Staten Island are unique and memorable. We get a lot of people who say they can’t find those products in their new hometowns,” said Berber.
