STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In a time of rebuilding the local dining scene during the pandemic recovery, several new restaurants have sprung up on Staten Island. So we took a closer look at one of them — Lava in Richmond Valley — on the Advance’s weekly 11:30 a.m. Wednesday food broadcast, The Dish. Co-owner Mario Perillo offered a glimpse at several of the tapas now coming from the Iberian-themed kitchen.
Lava is the sister restaurant to Patrizia’s of Eltingville, known for its vibrant Italian fare, wood-fired pizza and over-the-top birthday song delivery. The name “Lava” is a nod to Mt. Vesuvius which soars above Naples, Perillo’s hometown. Yet despite the Italian connections, this South Shore eatery aims for something different in the borough with riffs on Spanish fare and a bright nightlife.
After-hours on Fridays and Saturdays at Lava will include cigar nights on the outdoor patio section and DJ music until 4 p.m.
Perillo is proud of the food program which includes slow-roasted short ribs, empanadas and several seafood dishes including ceviche. Lunch and dinner can be served to guests throughout the restaurant’s three dining rooms and expansive lounge area. A cocktail program includes mixed drinks made with Lava’s own fruit purees.
Check out The Dish to hear Mario’s dreams for the restaurant. His excitement brims over the announcement of Lava’s grand opening on Friday, Oct. 29 which starts at 10 p.m.
Lava is located at 4916 Arthur Kill Rd., 929-744-1575. Social media and a website is in the works. Closed on Mondays, the eatery is open at 11 a.m. otherwise through the week. Meals are served until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 10 p.m. other days.
