Buddy vs Duff 3: Release the Cake-en! - Guilty Eats

The Food Network baking battle royale, also known as Buddy vs Duff 3, has reached Week 6 and things are starting to get pretty tense among the bakers and cake decorators. Going into Episode 6 Duff “The Ace of Cakes” Goldman held a razor thin six point lead over Buddy “The Cake Boss” Valastro so it’s still anyone’s game as we head toward the finish line.

One of the more interesting aspects of Buddy vs Duff 3 is the fact that without any host or judges in the traditional sense, the two cake titans are pretty much left alone to make things up as they go along. One key example is deciding on what theme the cakes will use each week.

For Week 6, Buddy and Duff decided on pirates. Which, if you know your pirate lore, could provide almost limitless inspiration for what could be some truly amazing cake work. While Buddy decided on a more cartoonish interpretation featuring a shark and a luckless pirate captain, Duff went all in on a ghost pirate ship heavy on special effects and details.

One of the other great things about this season is that with no host, more time is spent watching the two master bakers create their cake masterpieces. Watching as each goes through the initial plan and then trying to execute said plan has made for some great food TV, much better in some ways then last season.

Can Buddy take the lead from Duff and win Buddy vs Duff 3?

With Buddy down by just six points, you could tell from the get go that he wanted this win. In addition, Buddy’s head sculptor Ralph Attanasia used to play a pirate at kids parties so since he is already all in on pirate culture, he wanted a victory pretty bad as well.

If Buddy was going to get a win, it wasn’t going to come easy. Duff created a pirate ghost ship that had to been seen to be believed. It screamed spooky and hit all the right notes with the panel of 50 judges from across the country. In addition to the waves moving and the ship itself rocking back and forth, it had cannons that actually fired. Very impressive stuff.

However, Buddy came to play. His cake told a great story about a pirate captain whose luck was constantly running out. The detail and whimsy he and his team put into the final product was amazing. It might not have had the level of detail that Duff’s did, but it told a much more entertaining story.

In the end, the judges decided they preferred a good pirate yarn over a ghost ship with no crew. They gave Buddy the win and with that, the two cake titans go into the penultimate episode of the season tied.

Next week sees Buddy and Duff create cakes with an architectural bent. Can Buddy finally take the lead going into the finale or will Duff reclaim his place atop the leaderboard? We will find out next Sunday.
