Over the past 15 years, Top Chef has displayed the talents of memorable chefs. These chefs impress judges with their culinary ability while also creating dishes that are worthy of the Top Chef title. There are many dishes created on the series that are exceptional, but only a few of the dishes are iconic and stayed in the judge's minds long after eating them.
As season 18 wraps up, fans of the show remember the winners of past seasons and their ability to take on each challenge. These past winners were not only able to beat out the other competitors, but they were also able to create a dish that was iconic to the judges, the viewers, and solidified their win in the competition.
10 Kristen Kish/French Mushrooms
During season 10, Kristen Kish stayed under the radar while still exciting judges. Kish was able to showcase her talents until she was eliminated close to the series finale. However, Kish competed fiercely in Last Chance Kitchen and was able to return to Top Chef to solidify her win.
Kish created many memorable dishes on the show but her most iconic was her take on French Mushrooms. Despite the mushrooms feeling more like a side dish, the judges adored them so much that she won the Elimination Challenge and the $10,000 cash prize that came with it. Kish's mushrooms were so iconic that she ended up adding them to her restaurant menu after her win.
9 Paul Qui/King Crab With Lobster Broth and "The Pan AM"
Paul Qui became the chef to watch during season 9 when he competed fiercely and won a staggering 9 of the 17 challenges on the show. Qui was cocky and had every right to be because he created memorable dishes that impressed the judges. Tom Colicchio, one of the main judges from Top Chef, even commented that Qui was the most talented chef from the first seasons of the show.
Qui was able to cook dishes inspired by his past, but one dish that the judges gushed over was his king crab with lobster broth and lemon snow paired with his cocktail named "The Pan AM" with kaffir limes, Thai chilies, and rum. Qui crafted this dish during a Fire and Ice challenge on the show, and the judges were shocked at his perfect pairing. This dish also won him a trip for two to Costa Rica.
8 Richard Blais/Black Chocolate Ice Cream
Richard Blais became a fan favorite after he first competed in season 4. He lost to Stephaine Izard, but he came back for season 8 and competed against other all-star chefs for the Top Chef title. Blais incorporated molecular gastronomy into his cooking and solidified his victory by staying true to his roots throughout the competition.
Blais' dishes were well-thought-out and unique, and his most iconic dish on the show was one that appealed to judges instantly. During a quickfire challenge, the chefs were tasked with creating a dish that was solely judged by the presentation. Blais created a black chocolate ice cream with menthol crystals, herbal salad, and mint ice cream dots. The dish was visually appealing and impressed the judges instantly. Even though the judges didn't taste the dish, they were still enamored with the overall presentation.
7 Kevin Sbraga/Tuna And Veal With Romaine Leaves
Kevin Sbraga was definitely the underdog of season 7. Even though he went on to win the competition, he only won one elimination over the course of the season. Sbraga stayed under the radar during his season, but he stayed confident throughout the entire competition.
The most iconic dish Sbraga created during his season was tuna and veal with romaine leaves, pine nuts, and Mediterranean condiments. This dish was created during an elimination challenge where the chefs were tasked with making dishes that were best served cold. The judges thought Sbraga's dish was unique and were blown away at the talent used to execute the dish. This was the first and only challenge win for Sbraga. He also won a six-night trip to Hilton Hawaiian Village during this challenge.
6 Michael Voltaggio/Grape Leaves Stuffed With Couscous
Michael Voltaggio became instantly popular during season 6 of Top Chef after fans learned that his brother Bryan Voltaggio was competing against him during the season. Michael and Bryan dredged up drama for viewers, but ultimately Michael was the winner of season 6.
Michael was a powerhouse during his season and won numerous challenges. His most iconic plate of food was created during a quickfire challenge where the chefs were tasked with creating a dish using grapes. Michael created a grape leaf stuffed with couscous, vinegar glazed grape, and scallop kabob the judges absolutely loved. The judges commented on the creativity of the meal and even stated it was a winner's dish. After winning the quickfire with this dish, Michael also won a Toyota Prius.
5 Hosea Rosenberg/Smoked Pork Loin
Season 5 of the series housed many fan-favorite chefs that helped to create an overall memorable season. Each chef that competed was talented and unique, but Hosea Rosenberg topped them all. His style of cooking centered on his New Mexico roots and judges adored his cooking early on.
The iconic dish that fans remember from Rosenberg was a smoked pork loin with chipotle mashed potatoes and an apple brandy jus. Rosenberg's inspiration from the dish came from a popular Christmas song and he embraced Christmas through his plate of food. The judges loved Rosenberg's devotion to the challenge and his ability to change his plan despite a fridge malfunction that ruined his main protein.
4 Stephanie Izard/Duck Breast With Mushrooms
Stephanie Izard took her season by storm. Her competitiveness and fun-loving nature made her a fan favorite early on in the competition. Izard also wasn't afraid to step outside the box with her cooking, ultimately helping her stand out among the other chefs.
Izard's most iconic dish was the first elimination challenge dish she created. In the challenge, she went head to head with another chef in recreating a classic dish. Izard's inspiration was duck a l'orange and she created duck breast with mushrooms and bok choy, and duck spring rolls with an orange-soy glaze. Izard's dish showcased her talent and impressed judges immediately.
3 Hung Huynh/Sous-Vide Chicken
During season 3, fans met the powerhouse chef Hung Huynh. Huynh cooked food that honored his Vietnamese roots and impressed judges with his consistency. Huynh was quiet and stayed lowkey throughout the season, but beat out many fan favorites in order to win.
The iconic dish that Huynh created in his season was a sous-vide chicken with crisp chicken skin and Pommes Dauphine. The judges were blown away by the technique in creating such a complex dish and Huynh proved that he was a worthy competitor to the other chefs. The dish also required a difficult level of technique that Huynh proved he was able to execute well.
2 Ilan Hall/Baked Escargot
Season 2 is not necessarily a favorite season among Top Chef fans. There were many instances of cheating and bullying that shocked viewers and almost cost many chefs their chance to compete. Despite season 2 being filled with controversy, Hall was able to create dishes that were fantastic and memorable.
Hall's iconic dish was baked escargot in the shell. Hall made this during the first elimination challenge in which the chefs got mystery crates and created a dish from the ingredients inside. The judges were impressed by his technique and subtlety, and this win helped Hall gain the confidence he needed to win the entire competition.
1 Harold Dieterle/Mortadella And Dandelion Sandwich
Harold Dieterle is the first winner of Top Chef and was able to beat out many other fan-favorite chefs on his rise to victory. Despite Top Chef finding its footing as a competition show, Dieterle was able to create classic dishes that impressed the judges early on.
Dieterle's most iconic dish was a mortadella and dandelion sandwich. As simple as this recipe may seem, the overall deliciousness of the sandwich allowed Dieterle to shine. Dieterle's dish also impressed the judges and made him the competitor to beat. Dieterle's winning sandwich was also featured on the menu of Tom Colicchio's sandwich restaurant in San Francisco.
