Much has transpired in 2020, with the unwelcome COVID-19 crisis challenging every one of us. We’ve survived with the help of family and friends, and with the tireless efforts of our healthcare workers and public servants, whose strength and resilience have given us hope and encouragement. And for that we are grateful and thankful.

Here a few highlights from the social scene in Greenwich and beyond in the past year.

Greenwich resident Michael Kay, host of “The Michael Kay Show” and the YES Network’s “Center Stage,” was seen having lunch at Caren’s Cos Cobber in Greenwich with fellow Greenwich resident John “Flip” Filippelli, the YES Network’s president of production and programming. Also enjoying lunch at the popular spot was Greenwich native Tim Teufel, a former Major League Baseball player and current coach who dined with his former classmates and friends Casey O’Brien, Jim Kavanagh and Steve Gordon.

Houston Astro turned New York Yankee pitcher Gerrit Cole and his wife, Amy Crawford, a former UCLA softball player, bought a home in Greenwich. Cole signed a record-breaking $324 million deal with the Yankees, which gave him the biggest pitching contract in baseball history.

Former Major League Baseball player and manager Bobby Valentine shared his 70th birthday from his home in Stamford in a virtual conversation with fans and N.Y. Mets players Wally Backman, Ron Darling and Greenwich resident Lee Mazzilli.

Brunswick School graduate Aaron Sabato from Rye Brook, N.Y., was drafted by the Minnesota Twins. The 21-year-old University of North Carolina first baseman was the 12th Tar Heel drafted in the first round since 2006.

Pop singing sensation Justin Bieber was seen dining at Tony’s at the JHouse in Riverside. Others spotted there include former New York Giants tight end Howard Cross and Academy Award-nominated actor/producer Chazz Palminteri of Bedford, N.Y.

Actors and close friends Bradley Cooper and Leonardo DiCaprio were seen cruising in a boat on Long Island Sound and dining at Bartaco in Westport. Cooper was said to be renting a home on Sasco Hill Road in Fairfield for the summer.

Former Major League Soccer player Edson Buddle, head coach of USL League Two’s Westchester Flames, was seen having dinner outside at MIKU Sushi on Greenwich Avenue.

Anchor Greg Kelly, host of Newsmax TV’s “Greg Kelly Reports,” and his wife, creative director Judith Gray, were seen having dinner with Greenwich resident Mark Simone, radio host from 710 WOR, and Hollywood producers Rick Friedberg and Francine LeFrak on the patio at Valbella Restaurant in Riverside. Kelly and his wife, who welcomed a baby girl in February, also celebrated his birthday at the popular restaurant over the Christmas holidays.

Scarsdale, N.Y., native and Daytime Emmy-winning actress Susan Lucci and her husband Helmut Huber celebrated their wedding anniversary at The Homestead Inn-Thomas Henkelmann in Greenwich.

Greenwich native and Oscar-winning actress Glenn Close sold Beanfield, her historic farmhouse of 30 years in nearby Bedford Hills, N.Y.

Fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger found a buyer after putting his 22-acre estate on John Street in Greenwich up for sale for $47.5 million while he and his wife, Dee, find new digs in Palm Beach, Fla.

New York Yankees Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara, put their Rye, N.Y., estate on the market for $3.995 million after building a new home in nearby White Plains, N.Y.

Actor Richard Gere, 70, and his wife, publicist Alejandra Silva, 37, welcomed their second son together at their home in Pound Ridge, N.Y., in April. Gere also shares a 20-year-old son with his former wife, actress Carey Lowell.

Actor Alec Baldwin, 62, and his wife, 36-year-old fitness instructor Hilaria, of Bedford, N.Y., welcomed her fifth child, a son Eduardo “Edu” Pao Lucas, in September.

Film producer Cody Gifford, son of TV personality Kathie Lee Gifford and the late football great Frank Gifford, married his longtime girlfriend Erika Brown at Gifford’s waterfront home in Riverside over the Labor Day weekend. Kathie Lee Gifford’s daughter, actress Cassidy Gifford, tied the knot with Ben Wierda at his family’s home in Michigan in June.

Actor and comedian Adam Sandler was seen picking up food after Yom Kippur at Fred 06825 eatery on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield.

NBA all-star player Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz and his family donated $12 million to his alma mater, Greenwich Country Day School. The money will support construction of a new athletic center as well as fund scholarships for low-income students to have the opportunity to attend the private school. The newly created Mitchell Family Scholarship Fund is the largest in GCDS history. Mitchell also spoke at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich this fall.

Greenwich resident Steve Cohen, new owner of the New York Mets, was seen dining at Polpo Restaurant in Greenwich with fellow resident Jeff Wilpon, former COO of the Mets; Brodie Van Wagenen, former general manager of the Mets; and Omar Minaya, previous general manager of the Mets.

“One Life,” the memoir from Megan Rapinoe, an Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women’s World Cup champion, was released this fall to bookstores. Rapinoe and her partner WNBA’s Seattle Storm star Sue Bird, who recently announced their engagement, reside in Greenwich.

A new Greenwich version of the game of Monopoly, created by Top Trumps USA Inc. and highlighting some of the town’s favorite locations and events, can be found at many stores in town.

Greenwich philanthropists Ray and Barbara Dalio donated $4 million in support of medical care and food for those who cannot afford it during the COVID-19 crisis in Fairfield County.

Husband-and-wife actors Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, who live in nearby Bedford, N.Y., pledged $1 million to Feeding America and Food Banks Canada during the coronavirus pandemic.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, residents of nearby Chappaqua, N.Y., sent over 400 pizzas to hospitals throughout Westchester County to help feed healthcare workers during the pandemic.

Fashion icon Ralph Lauren of Bedford, N.Y., donated $10 million from his company and the Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation to benefit charitable organizations associated with the coronavirus crisis.

And that’s all for now.

Happy New Year — 2021!
