STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Here we are dishing on the “The Dish” which serves up fresh food news in the borough over chats with chefs and restaurateurs each Wednesday at 9 a.m on Facebook Live. It looks at trends in the business and issues affecting the various establishments in the borough. And often the conversations with proprietors can take surprising and fun turns.
This week takes us wheeling a cart through the new Beverage Island, a 32,000 square-foot beer and soft drink warehouse open to the public with a climate controlled shop. There are thousands of brew styles in its inventory at 66 Willow Ave., Rosebank (929-369-0100) plus cocktail mixers and unique sodas for the sipping. Owners Parveen “P.K.” Aggarwal and Manny Ramirez can show Staten Islanders the exciting, sometimes rare imports and unusual microbrews. Or customers can order online and check out the offerings on the shop’s website — Beverageislandnyc.com.
Fans of Manny and P.K. have followed the operation from its original location on Richmond Terrace, closed in January to make way for a charter school. The official grand opening of Beverage Island will be Saturday, Oct., 31 with free raffles and give-aways. Also up next this fall courtesy of Manny and P.K.: Beer lovers will enjoy Black Friday specials including the limited release of Goose Island’s 2020 Bourbon County Stout variants.
Beverage Island is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Next week, we’ll jump over to Filled, a Filipino Bakery and Silog house built by Jesus. No kidding — the Christian-themed cafe at 400 Victory Blvd., Tompkinsville (347-857-6360) was inspired by the “church family” of proprietors Ellen San Miguel and Kats Alvir. Wherever you are in the world, zoom into the restaurant with us for a tour and talk with the two entrepreneurs.
