CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dish satellite TV subscribers have one of the area’s news stations back on their TVs.

WEWS Channel 5 announced Sunday that Dish subscribers can watch the channel again after a dispute occurred between the satellite company and The E.W. Scripps Co., the owner of WEWS.

“Scripps has reached an agreement with Dish, and all Scripps stations are back on the air for Dish subscribers,” WEWS said in a statement. “We apologize for the disruption in service our viewers experienced and thank them for their loyalty and patience through this period.”

Subscribers lost access to WEWS in July, as Dish and Scripps failed to agree on distribution terms. WEWS was among 60 stations in 42 markets that temporarily went off the air.

Scripps said with Dish not coming to an agreement, it was keeping viewers from watching valuable news programming regarding the coronavirus, social unrest and information on the election. Dish claimed it proposed “multiple extension options” to Scripps to keep ABC affiliates on, but Scripps didn’t budge on a deal.

Satellite TV subscribers can sometimes lose access to channels because while satellite companies look to keep rates down, various programmers want to drive up revenue. Most of the time, these blackouts last for only a few days, but they can sometimes last for weeks or months.
