Celebrate your own perfect pairing with a dessert of this toothsome twosome, Nutmeg Cake Design’s signature pale gray duo design cake. Creator Meg Skill draws on her fine arts background and deftness with an extruder to painstakingly hand-lay 37 delicate arches of fondant for a sculptural motif. Her inspirations include ceramic art trends she was digging on Instagram, Rorschach ink blots and modernist sculptor Constantin Brâncuși’s “The Kiss,” which depicts a couple, face to face, in an embrace. “I went to art school for painting, and my entire thesis was based on mirror images and symmetry,” Skill says. “I like the idea of two things morphing into one.” For more than double the visual interest, the base fondant that covers each tier (all are first covered in buttercream) is textured. Skill mixes poppy seeds into the icing and finishes with a light press of foil. Clients have endless options for customization. Cake-loving couples with different sweet tooths will appreciate the chance to pick two flavors, one for each tower. Skill has also done a solo cake version of the design and is happy to swap the pale gray for your color preference. From $10 a serving, 220 Krams Ave., nutmegcakedesign.com
