"Made with love and joy, made with love and joy. Every cake is made with love and joy," Brittany Smiley Jones said.

The baking buzz all started with a snow day from the College at Brockport. Jones, alongside her grandma, Mama J, learned how to make Mama J’s lemon pound cake.

"That is the household cake that brought the family together and made my grandfather happy and I just put a smile on everybody’s face," Jones said.

A year later, Jones started selling cake slices at her family church to help pay for a mission trip to Africa this year. COVID-19 canceled those plans, but come to find out, people in Rochester love her Mama J’s lemon pound cakes and spread the made-from-scratch love on @whatsgoodintheroc on Instagram.

"And all of a sudden her post went viral and people all around Rochester started connecting with me and I was like wow this is amazing, I just didn’t imagine it spreading this fast, and I didn’t imagine the positive upward change that we had recently so it has been amazing," she said.

She estimates she's made 200 pound cakes in her at-home bakery. She sells them for $25 and donates a portion of sales to missions here in Rochester and in Africa.

"I didn’t expect for people to like the cake, and I didn’t expect for it to grow, and I just didn’t expect it so I look forward to us just being more of a light to people and help feeding people. When life gives you lemons, you know, you’ve got the cake and it’s gonna bring a smile to your family's face," Jones added.
