It’s not the most dramatic news, but Costco’s announcement that it’s eliminating its iconic half-sheet cakes is a sadly telling indication of how much the coronavirus has changed the way we live now.
Those cakes have been the centerpiece of birthday parties and especially graduations for many. One will feed 50 people, and costs $20. Costco stopped selling them around the country for the past month.
Because we haven’t been able to hold large birthday parties. Nor have there been graduation bashes, with family and friends gathered for photos and cake. Spring festivities been virtual and small. Or drive-by celebrations, where folks honk as they parade past the honoree in a mini-convoy.
We keep our distance. There’s no need for something that feeds 50.
Costco has other, smaller cakes, but the message is clear: Life is very different. And there’s no sugarcoating it.
