The addition of 12 cities brings Dish’s Boost Mobile wireless network to 89 markets. The company says that its footprint now covers 140 million people.
The new markets are Billings MT; Cincinnati; Columbia, SC; Denver; Philadelphia, Fayetteville, NC; Jacksonville, FL; Minneapolis; Portland, OR; Shreveport, Tucson and Washington, DC.
Dish noted that Boost Mobile and Boost Infinite service now supports voice over new radio (VoNR), which relies solely on 5G for service. Boost Mobile is the name that Dish uses for its prepaid service. Boost Infinite is the name for Dish’s postpaid service. Pricing for the former starts at $15 per month and the latter at $25 per month.
Compatible devices include the iPhone 15 family, Samsung A23 5G, Motorola edge+ 2022 and 2023, Moto G Stylus 2022 and 2023, Moto G 5G 2022 and 2023, Motorola Razr, and the Celero 5G+, which is made by Dish and is exclusive to Boost.
Dish bought the Boost Mobile business, which at the time was prepaid only, from T-Mobile as a condition of T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint. The deal closed in 2020.
Two years later – in June 2022 – Dish said it had launched its 5G wireless service, Project Genesis, in more than 120 markets. The focus was on tier 2 cities such as Tuscaloosa, AL; Midland, MI; Boise, ID and three Springfields — Massachusetts, Illinois, and Missouri. It had launched in Las Vegas the previous month.
Dish owns spectrum and is moving traffic onto that network as it is built. The company also has agreements with AT&T and T-Mobile to use their networks to support the service where Dish’s own network is not available.
When Dish acquired the Boost Mobile business, the company committed to cover 70% of the U.S. population with 5G by this year. In June, Dish said that it had met that threshold. The company said it had launched more than 15,000 5G cell sites.
The company has touted the fact that it is building its 5G network from scratch and therefore is using the most cutting-edge technologies. For example, the company is making heavy use of O-RAN technology.
