Halloween Starts on Saturday with Pleasanton’s Brew Crawl
Just like trick-or-treaters on Halloween, Brew Crawlers will start early Saturday night on Main Street—they do have 25-plus brews and ales they can sample, but they only have from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to do so.
We’re pretty sure they’ll figure it out, as this is the 11th annual Halloween Brew Crawl, and we’re also expecting music, food, and lots of costumes. Tickets are $60 (at Museum on Main), and just because the kids have to wait until Tuesday is no reason the adults should.
Chocoween Means Trick-or-TCHO in Berkeley on Thursday
For a different lunchtime experience on Thursday, head to TCHO’s chocolate factory (on San Pablo Avenue just south of Ashby Avenue) and skip the veggies. Instead, there will be seasonal chocolate tastings (pumpkin, of course) and hot chocolate.
In addition, take 25 percent off any in-store purchases during the 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. event—which costs $5. Oh, and there’s a costume contest as well with plenty of chocolate surprises as prizes.
Dessert Cafe Arrives in Berkeley
If you’re not sweeted out after binging on Halloween candy, you might be interested to know that the Dessert Cafe has opened its second East Bay location featuring sweets and snacks with more than a little Korean influence—this one a block north of the Ashby/Shattuck Avenue intersection in south Berkeley.
That means mochi doughnuts, milk teas, and Korean hot dogs to go along with more familiar sweets, allowing traditionalists and trailblazers to both satisfy their sugar cravings.
Livermore’s Charming Fig to Bounce Back After Fire
The restaurant business is tough enough without unanticipated disasters, but Livermore’s Charming Fig is determined to stay charming after a fire on October 15.
When it does get back in business, expect the same menu, with eggs and breakfast bowls in the morning, salads in the afternoon, and sandwiches and cheeseboards all day. Oh, and there’s wine and beer too, so keep your eyes open at Holmes Street and Concannon Boulevard (across the street from Lucky) to see when the Charming Fig resumes its flirtation with Livermore residents.
Dynamite Donuts Is Out to Carbo-Load Hercules
No, the new place on San Pablo isn’t trying to fatten up the slayer of the Hydra, but rather serving the sweet tooth of the city of Hercules. Tucked in between San Pablo and Interstate 80, Dynamite Donuts will offer a perfect dessert after barbecue lovers finish off their protein-heavy meals at the Kinder’s next door.
Souley Vegan Is the Latest Oakland Restaurant Scene Victim
Lack of foot traffic and a steady decline in business spelled the end for Souley Vegan, which had been a mainstay on Broadway (just a few blocks from Jack London Square) since 2009.
Souley Vegan was one of the first purely vegan restaurants in the East Bay, and during its heyday had outlets in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. Now, sadly, all are closed, but chef Tamearra Dyson hasn’t shut the doors on a future venture.
Walnut Tavern Takes Over Former Nico’s Location
Nico’s had several iterations at Walnut and Vine streets in Berkeley—next to Peet’s Coffee near Chez Panisse—but the spot now belongs to the Walnut Tavern Bar and Grill. The new place is, not surprisingly, a bar and grill with some menu twists, and its comfortable vibe should please the locals.
Kuriya Japanese Kitchen Comes to Albany
Just a block north of Solano Avenue on San Pablo, Kuriya Japanese Kitchen has taken over the old Pearl House spot, and has traded in the Chinese food of Pearl House for a more upscale Japanese menu.
And that menu includes sushi and sashimi, along with other Japanese staples such as ramen, curries, and teriyaki.
