If you guessed “smorgasbord,” then you’d be correct.
“Smorgasbord”—for those of you who may be unfamiliar—is essentially just a huge, all-you-can-eat buffet (which makes sense, as the word’s literal translation is “sandwich table” ) of Pennsylvania Dutch food.
“The seemingly endless supply of fresh, delicious salads, soups, vegetables, fruit, meat, main courses, and (of course) desserts will delight your taste buds and you certainly won’t leave hungry!” details an explanation of the dish on the official Lancaster website.
According to Food & Wine’s list, Miller’s Smorgasbord in Lancaster County is one of the places to be when it comes to dabbling in this delectable delight, where you can “[make] yourself a classic spinach salad with sweet and smoky warm bacon dressing, go for fat slices of baked ham in a cider jus, grab a Pennsylvania Dutch-style chicken pot pie, and don’t forget sides of grilled local vegetables often sourced directly from neighbors.”
There’s also Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl, whose drool-inducing spread PennLive had the pleasure of covering previously.
While anyone can point to other Pennsylvania staples like fastnacht (if you’re in the state at the right time, that is) or even a Philly cheesesteak, Food & Wine does have their reasons for picking the food they did.
“As a magazine, over the decades of celebrating the very best of food and drink, we’ve come to greatly appreciate each state’s unique contributions to American food culture—that’s how this list came to be,” reads the article.
Bon appétit!
