Artifact, a full-service restaurant and bar inside the newly remodeled Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, has opened for lunch.
Artifact is operated by the Urban Kitchen Group with a menu created by Urban chef de cuisine Jeff Armstrong and executive chef Tim Kolanko. Artifact is serving a globally inspired menu that reflects the international art and textiles showcased in the exhibitions and collections of the Mingei, which reopened Sept. 3 after a three-year renovation. Artifact’s sleek interior, which includes a 30-foot reclaimed wood bar, was designed by architect Jennifer Luce.
The menu is divided into six sections with both shareable and single serving items. There’s a selection of snacks, dumplings, salads and bowls, soups, wraps and desserts. Prices range from $13 to $24, and a sampler plate for all four items on the snack menu is $38. Sample items include a rock shrimp gyoza (potsticker) with caraway seed, cultured cram and Georgian herbs, a lamb kibbeh (meatball) wrap with cumin, allspice, cucumber, Kalamata olive and lemon dill yogurt on sangak flatbread; and Basque burnt cheesecake with persimmon ginger jam.
Hours for now are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, with a happy hour service at the bar from 3 to 5 p.m. on those days. A supper club-style dinner service will be introduced after the holiday season. Artifact at the Mingei is at 1439 El Prado San Diego. Visit artifactatmingei.com.
VAGA named to Esquire’s top 40 list
VAGA, executive chef Claudette Zepeda’s globally inspired restaurant at the newly opened Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas, has been named to Esquire Magazine’s list of the “40 Best New Restaurants in America.”
VAGA ranked No. 34 on the list, which was compiled by four of the magazine’s editors, including culture and lifestyle director Kevin Sintumuang, who visited VAGA and chose it for the 2021 list. VAGA is the only San Diego County restaurant to make this year’s list. In 2019, Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad made the list and this fall won a Michelin star.
Sintumuang praised the “curiosity” in Zepeda’s dishes, which she has said are her interpretations of food she grew up eating on both sides of the San Diego/Tijuana border. He singled out her octopus with pepita sauce, brisket-filled bao buns and wood-fired whole seabass. He also praised the restaurant’s view of the Pacific Ocean. On her Instagram page, Zepeda thanked Esquire and Sintumuang for the recognition, with the promise she will continue to work harder for her customers and her kitchen staff.
“After the last two years we’ve all had, waking up to this brought me to tears,” she wrote. “I love my VAGA restaurant team and this is definitely for them, us and North County San Diego.”

An Orange County native of Danish heritage, Ruck is the former executive chef of Angler, a Michelin one star seafood restaurant on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.
