Pandemic restrictions have eased over the past several months, but that doesn’t mean everyone has family and friends to join them for a birthday celebration or have the necessary supplies to make a cake.
The Downriver West Kiwanis Club decided to use its July meeting to help those in need by implementing its Birthday Cake Kit project. The group partnered with six businesses throughout the Downriver area, and set up collection sites to collect boxes of cake mix, cans of frosting, packages of candles, other goodies and disposable cake pans. The kits also contained a birthday card. The Kiwanis Club also received $500 in cash donations.
The members assembled 300 kits at the Brownstown Community Center and distributed them to 10 organizations throughout the Downriver area. A few of the organizations that received the kits were Mimi’s Mission, Vista Maria, Fish & Loaves, and The Madison Center in Wyandotte.
“We are extremely excited to do this project and be able to donate these birthday cake kits to organizations that work with children and young adults who are dealing with various issues, such as homelessness, or physical, emotional and mental health challenges,” said Joann Bomia, club member and project leader for the birthday cake kit project. “We hope to be able to repeat this project and grow it every year to give more children the opportunity to celebrate their birthday.”
