Adventure Time’s Fionna and Cake getting a spinoff series - Polygon

Adventure Time is returning for an all new series — except this time, it’s not Finn the Human and Jake the Dog leading the way, but their gender-swapped counter parts Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat (and in Cake’s case, also species swapped). The 10-episode series will premiere on HBO Max, with Adam Muto, longtime Adventure Time producer, serving as showrunner. In the new show, the two will journey across the multiverse, along with the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov.

Fionna and Cake, the genderbent versions of Finn and Jake, first appeared in a 2011 episode of Adventure Time. As it turned out, Fionna and Cake were products of the Ice King’s in-universe fanfiction, where everyone in the land of Ooo had a different gendered counterpart. Princess Bubblegum, for instance, was Prince Gumball, and Vampire Queen Marceline was now Marshall Lee. These genderbent characters appeared in subsequent episodes and were also mentioned in others. The Fionna and Cake episodes were inspired by a series of comics drawn by Adventure Time character designer, Natasha Allegri, who has since gone on to create popular web series Bee and Puppycat.

Previously, HBOMax released three hour-long Adventure Time specials, with a fourth on its way soon. The first one followed loveable robot BMO, while the second one centered on Princess Bubblegum and Marceline’s relationship, and the third reunited Finn and Jake. The final special, which follows Peppermint Butler, will be coming this fall.

There is no current release date for Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.
