It’s never too late to have a piece of cake. Eating it after 40 years, however, may not be a good move.

A slice of the wedding cake from the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer is headed for auction, the BBC reported.

The couple was married on July 29, 1981, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. They separated in 1992 and divorced four years later.

The well-preserved slice of history is expected to fetch at least 500 pounds -- or slightly under $700 in U.S. currency, according to Chris Albury, of Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Gloucestershire. The auction is scheduled to be held on Aug. 11.

“It appears to be in exactly the same good condition, but we advise against eating it,” Albury told the BBC.

The slice measures 8 inches by 7 inches and is from one of the 23 official wedding cakes. It was given to Moyra Smith, a member of the Queen Mother’s household at Clarence House, the news network reported. She preserved the topping with cling film.

The slice features the royal coat-of-arms and is colored in gold, red, blue, and silver, the BBC reported.

Smith kept the slice in an old floral cake tin and taped a handmade label on the lid, which read, “Handle with Care - Prince Charles & Princess Diane’s [sic] Wedding Cake.” Smith signed the label and dated it July 27, 1981.

Smith’s family sold the cake to a collector in 2008, the BBC reported.

Other slices of the cake have been sold to collectors. One slice, which was sold in August 2014 by Nate D. Sanders Auctions, fetched $1,375.
