State Fair funnel cake maven Wanda ‘Fernie’ Winter has died
Wanda ‘Fernie’ Winter, the State Fair of Texas fixture known for serving up powdered sugar-dusted funnel cakes from her concession stand at The Dock, passed away this past weekend, her family has announced. She was 95 years old.
Winter first started working at the State Fair with her husband in 1967, according to the Dallas Morning News. After a trip to Branson in the 1980s, where they tasted funnel cakes for the first time, Winter and her husband John decided to bring the dish to the State Fair of Texas. Eventually, Winter’s funnel cakes developing a large enough following that her four daughters had to step in to assist her. By 2019, the last time the fair took place, Winter had five separate Fernie’s Funnel Cakes stands at the event. Her funnel cakes had been finalists for the Big Tex Choice Awards, and several other dishes sold at her booths — Fernie’s Hoppin’ John Cake (2018), Fernie’s Holy Moly Carrot Cake Roly (2015) and Fernie’s Deep Fried Peaches and Cream (2009) — were winners.

A vegan fast food joint will bring “chikn” sandwiches to Greenville Avenue
Project Pollo, a small San Antonio-based fast food chain that serves up vegan takes on chicken sandwiches, burgers, and wings, will open a location in Dallas next month.
The restaurant, which will be at 6857 Greenville Avenue, sells soy-based faux meat dishes like a buffalo chicken sandwich topped with pickled jalapenos, a double Impossible Meat burger topped with vegan cheese, and loaded fries with cashew “queso” sauce, grilled onions, and pico de gallo. Sales of many of the dishes benefit anti-animal cruelty organizations.
An Australian-style coffee shop heads to East Dallas
LDU Coffee Shop, a small chain owned by a pair of brothers from Australian, will its third location in East Dallas in August. The shop, which brews a special single-origin bean roasted by White Rock Coffee, will be located at 9005 Garland Road, right next to Hypnotic Donuts, according to the Dallas Morning News. The two other locations are on Fitzhugh Avenue, and Preston Road near University Park.
One thing that sets LDU apart from other coffee shops is the vibe, more in line with Australian coffee shops, where the serving is quick and where few people longer to work or read, founder Adam Lowes tells the DMN. To that end, none of the locations offer wifi.
LDU is also know for its flat white, an iconic Australian espresso drink similar to a latte, but made with less milk.
