STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Richie Holmes brings back his drive-in movie theater at Juicy Lucy BBQ for a new season. The Ocean Breeze eatery kicks off one segment of its outdoor excitement with creepy reels and family-friendly flicks.
Holmes also brings back horseshoes and leagues for the game will start back up on Tuesdays going forward. That tradition is a hold-over from Joe & John Toto days when the restaurant was known for its Italian food and zesty scungilli.
Recently, the restaurant took top awards for its brisket. And with that winning dish, Holmes intends to take on the 5 Boro PicNYC when it comes back to the borough at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, Livingston, on May 29. In the meantime, the restaurant is open for indoor dining and supping on the patio or in the tent. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
Those are the Cliff Notes of what’s happening at Juicy Lucy. For the full story, check out a live discussion that took place at the restaurant on Friday, May 21 at lunchtime. In the reruns of the video, you will see two regulars on the Staten Island eating and drinking circuit known by their first names, Michelle and Debbie. Their chariot to Isle of Staaten’s dining rooms is Access-A-Ride.
Michelle was a server at the former Country Club Diner in Grasmere. She deadpanned, “I learned working in Greek diners that the Greek word for ‘animal’ is pronounced ‘zone’ and ordering food just for the sake of show puts me in the ‘zone zone.’’
Fun fact about Richie Holmes: The Metallica and Slayer fan taps into his inner-rock loving self by incorporating nods to the heavy metal bands. Flourishes on the Juicy Lucy logo, for instance, are a salute to the trash music genre.
Over a mouth-watering spread of Juicy Lucy favorites, Holmes gives a tour of the restaurant, a taste of its goodness and a demonstration on slicing brisket properly.
Take 20 minutes to take in The Dish, broadcast from Juicy Lucy at 809 Father Capodanno Boulevard. Share a few laughs over lunch and connect with fellow food friends who love their borough’s dining scene.
