On a recent episode of 90 Day Fiancé, Yara went above and beyond by making Jovi Dufren a fancy cake for his homecoming, but Jovi wasn't exactly appreciative. Jovi often comes under fire for being inconsiderate to his fiancé, Yara Zaya. The NOLA native has been criticized for everything from neglecting Yara and going to a strip club to epic manspreading in the car. Jovi’s less-than-enthusiastic response to the cake may have been less than what Yara was hoping for, but viewers are eager to find out more about the delicious-looking cake.
Throughout season eight, Jovi found many ways to let down his pregnant fiancé. But when he wasn’t able to reenter the country due to COVID-19 after traveling for work, for once it was completely out of his control. Yara was stuck by herself, several months pregnant, in a strange country during a pandemic. Jovi’s family pitched in to help her, but when Yara got word that Jovi would finally be able to return in time for his birthday, she was overjoyed and wanted to make his homecoming special.
In addition to getting Jovi an Apple Watch, Yara made Jovi a traditional Eastern-European Medovik cake. The honey-based cake is not for amateurs because it is a complex and time-consuming confection. The dish features several layers of thin, honey-infused cake sandwiched together with sour cream-based frosting that soaks into the cake layers, making them soft and tender. Once assembled and frosted, the cake is decorated with crumbled-up pieces of the cake layers. There’s no doubt that Yara spent hours making it and had every right to be proud of her creation. Medovik cakes are extremely popular in Russia and former Soviet Union countries, and it’s a dessert Yara has grown up eating.
Yara put a lot of effort into the cake and it certainly looked beautiful. But when Jovi took a taste, his reaction was lackluster. “Tastes like sand from the beach,” Jovi commented as he munched on the cake. In a confessional, Jovi said he appreciated the effort Yara put in, “But it was just so bad.” Fans didn’t care for his reaction and wonder why Yara fell for him in the first place. Jovi may not have enjoyed the cake, but Yara said she spent “many hours” making it, and he could have at least pretended to like it a little better
The cake might not have been what Jovi is used to, but the 90 Day Fiancé star could have been more appreciative in the moment. Yara’s Medovik cake was a big gesture and a sign of how thrilled she was to finally have her husband back home with her. It’s an indication that Yara is committed to working on their relationship and their future together. Yara mentioned she was an inexperienced baker, though based on her beautiful Medovik cake, she seems to have a hidden talent for confections.
