‘Wildflour is not over,’ but overseas deployment closes Seymour cake shop - CT Post

Even in a short phone conversation, Alyssa DeMatteo has to excuse herself twice to take care of customers at Wildflour Confections in Seymour. A lot of customers, she said, were trying to sneak in one more visit before the shop closed, at least for now, on Saturday.

DeMatteo will be deploying overseas with the Connecticut National Guard.

“We are not closing because of COVID,” DeMatteo said. It’s the uncertainty and the length of time she’ll be away, which, she says, won’t be just like a month of training.

“I don’t want to leave someone else hanging in case a third wave comes,” she said.

DeMatteo opened the storefront on Bank Street downtown in 2015 but had been in business for about a year and a half before that, she said.

“Since we opened, I’ve had people come to me with their engagement party,” DeMatteo said, “Then I’d do their bridal shower, their wedding. Then I’d do their gender reveal for their first child, then the baby shower, and eventually a third birthday party.

“That’s probably one of the coolest things, in all. To be a part of a series of life events, that’s something I didn’t expect seven years ago.”

Some of her best friends got involved in the business, she said, and when she’d go out in the community, she’d be recognized much more than she expected.

“I wasn’t the best student, but I’ve gone back to Seymour High School and talked to the economics, business classes, and told them how I made it,” DeMatteo said.

The Valley has also lost DiGiovanni’s Cafe & Catering on Main Street in Ansonia, which announced its closing last week on Facebook.

“It is with deep regret to inform you that due to the COVID-19 pandemic we have had a great reduction in business since March of 2020,” DiGiovanni’s post said. “Unfortunately the burden has become too heavy for us to sustain our business to support our young family.”

The cafe’s phone number is not in service, and online efforts to reach the owners were unsuccessful.

DeMatteo, though, said she plans to get back in business when she comes back from deployment. She can’t say more about that than she said in a Facebook post about the closing, but she asked her customers to keep an eye on the shop’s Facebook and Instagram feeds for updates while she’s away.

“Wildflour is not over,” DeMatteo said. “I’m not done with Wildflour. It’s going to bloom into something else when I come home.”
