In September, when Buddy Valastro gruesomely pinned his hand in his at-home bowling machine, he feared his cake decorating days were over. Only four months later, he’s already defying the odds.

After going through multiple surgeries and ongoing physical therapy, the Cake Boss legend delivered a fully decked out cake to the doctors who helped him recover so quickly—a towering replica of their hospital, Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, atop a rotunda of scrubs and medical accessories. Valastro shared photos of the masterpiece to Instagram.

“Check out the super special cake I made for Dr. Michelle Carlson, the nurses, and staff at @hspecialsurgery as a token of my immense appreciation!” he captioned the post. “It replicates the main hospital there in #NYC. I could never thank them enough for all they have done to help me on this journey to a full recovery.”

Fans and followers were elated to see the legendary baker doing what he loves again. “Cannot believe all you went through. Hope your recovery continues!” one commented. “I’m very glad they were able to save your hand. The world can’t do without the cake boss in action,” another added.

On Dec. 23, fans experienced Valastro’s accident and its aftermath in a TLC special called Buddy Valastro: Road to Recovery. It even featured security footage from the day of the incident in which Valastro’s brother-in-law Joey Faugno, a licensed EMT, rushed to the scene to free his fully impaled, dominant right hand from the bowling pinsetter using a saw. Valastro’s son, Buddy Jr., showed the cameras where it all went down, noting the blood that remained on the bowling pins.

Valastro was resetting them when the injury occurred. “I’ve reset it a hundred times,” he told People. “I guess I looked away, and then my hand got pinned. The metal barb pushed right through the middle of my ring finger and my middle finger.” In an interview with Today, he said, “I thought I was gonna faint.”

To see Valastro go down so quickly was definitely scary for his loved ones, but they rallied around him from the start, faithful that he would fully recover. In October, he was already practicing icing cakes with his non-dominant hand. But it’s safe to say it may be a while before he returns to the back of his bowling alley.
