Every investor in DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) should be aware of the most powerful shareholder groups. Institutions will often hold stock in bigger companies, and we expect to see insiders owning a noticeable percentage of the smaller ones. I quite like to see at least a little bit of insider ownership. As Charlie Munger said 'Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome.

DISH Network is a pretty big company. It has a market capitalization of US$16b. Normally institutions would own a significant portion of a company this size. What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About DISH Network?

Institutional investors commonly compare their own returns to the returns of a commonly followed index. So they generally do consider buying larger companies that are included in the relevant benchmark index.

DISH Network already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. If multiple institutions change their view on a stock at the same time, you could see the share price drop fast. It's therefore worth looking at DISH Network's earnings history below. Of course, the future is what really matters.

DISH Network is not owned by hedge funds. Our data shows that Ergen Family Trust is the largest shareholder with 26% of shares outstanding. With 5.8% and 5.6% of the shares outstanding respectively, Charles Ergen and Dodge & Cox are the second and third largest shareholders. Charles Ergen, who is the second-largest shareholder, also happens to hold the title of Top Key Executive.

We did some more digging and found that 7 of the top shareholders account for roughly 51% of the register, implying that along with larger shareholders, there are a few smaller shareholders, thereby balancing out each others interests somewhat.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. There are a reasonable number of analysts covering the stock, so it might be useful to find out their aggregate view on the future.

Insider Ownership Of DISH Network

The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

Insider ownership is positive when it signals leadership are thinking like the true owners of the company. However, high insider ownership can also give immense power to a small group within the company. This can be negative in some circumstances.

I can report that insiders do own shares in DISH Network Corporation. The insiders have a meaningful stake worth US$1.1b. I sometimes take an interest in whether they have been buying or selling.

General Public Ownership

The general public holds a 23% stake in DISH Network. While this group can't necessarily call the shots, it can certainly have a real influence on how the company is run.

Private Company Ownership

We can see that Private Companies own 26%, of the shares on issue. Private companies may be related parties. Sometimes insiders have an interest in a public company through a holding in a private company, rather than in their own capacity as an individual. While it's hard to draw any broad stroke conclusions, it is worth noting as an area for further research.
