Dish to Offer Cloud-Based Business Messaging on its 5G Network - Telecompetitor

Dish made another supplier announcement for the 5G network it is building. Dish plans to use a cloud-based business messaging platform from Mavenir.

This is the second announcement Dish has made involving Mavenir, which also will provide Dish with cloud-native OpenRAN (O-RAN) software. O-RAN is a key focus for Dish, which sees the open standards-based technology as a means of cutting costs by being vendor-agnostic. This will break vendor lock-in by allowing multiple companies to participate in a non-proprietary approach.

The Dish cloud-based business messaging platform that is the focus of the new Mavenir announcement leverages rich communications services and messaging-as-a-platform (RCS and MaaP) technologies to enable advanced voice and multimedia messaging such as cloud-native video, voice over Wi-Fi and Voice over LTE (VoWiFi and VoLTE).

The platform uses artificial intelligence and chatbots to provide customers access to services from an app where they can get answers from virtual assistants, assess and modify service plans and engage in promotions, according to a press release.

“Mavenir’s innovative, cloud-native software solutions are compliant with our reimagined network architecture, which enables us to change the wireless business model and select vendor services and functions on demand,” Dish Executive Vice President and Chief Network Officer Marc Rouanne said in a press release about Dish cloud-based business messaging plans. “Mavenir is already playing an important role in our RAN software, and with this agreement we now look to them for messaging services, and beyond.”

Earlier this month, Dish said that it will work with Qualcomm to test open and virtualized 5G RAN technology. Dish already had announced several vendors, including Altiostar, Fujistu, Mavenir, and Matrixx. The Qualcomm announcement is significant in that the firm will provide semiconductors that are expected to be used by “emerging vendors” contributing to the O-RAN.

The previous deal with Mavenir was announced in April.
