Houston-based cell tower operator Crown Castle has signed a deal with Dish Network to lease wireless equipment space on up to 20,000 of its properties as Dish seeks to build out a new mobile network to take on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

It is Dish’s first publicly announced deal for tower space, according to a joint news release issued Monday. Dish has already signed deals for other building blocks of a wireless network, including 5G radios and software.

“We are excited to establish this long-term strategic relationship with Dish, and we look forward to supporting their nationwide 5G network deployment for years to come,” said Crown Castle CEO Jay Brown in the release.

Dish, traditionally known as a satellite TV provider, moved into the cellular service business when it acquired the prepaid phone operations of Sprint as part of that carrier’s merger with T-Mobile. To appease regulators who worried about consolidation of the wireless industry, Sprint also sold its Boost Mobile business to Dish, which aims to become a new fourth nationwide carrier.

With the acquisition of the Sprint properties, Dish has about 9 million wireless customers as it begins building out a new 5G network. Dish has the rights to acquire the 800-MHz spectrum as part of the Sprint deal, and already owns other frequencies that can be used for wireless communications.

Dish has said it wants to have 20 percent of the United States population covered by its 5G network by 2021, and 70 percent by mid-2023. If it fails to make those goals, it could end up paying federal fines of up to $2.2 billion.

The company has started rolling out new wireless plans, including some that start with higher data limits that are cut in half after Dec. 31. Dish executives have said more wireless plans are coming before the holidays.

Dish also owns Sling TV, one of the earliest so-called “skinny bundle” streaming services that mimics a a cable TV service.

Crown Castle’s stock was down slightly to $166.86 in early afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Dish shares were up more that 5 percent at $33.30.
