Sharyn Sherman has been baking her way into people’s hearts for the last 35 years. Hence, the name: The Cake Lady.

What started out as a hobby has evolved into her first retail business

“ I love what I do,” Sherman said, “and there’s nothing better then the joy I get from people enjoying my desserts”

Sherman arrives in Harriman with considerable props.

For instance, famed chef Gordon Ramsay declared her carrot cake “the best he’s ever had.”

And then the Bergen Record raved about her cupcakes she has supplied (together with cakes and pies) to some of the best restaurants in Bergen, Rockland and Orange counties. She also has a loyal following.

Sherman said she is thrilled about landing in Harriman and has been overwhelmed by the reception that she’s received from the community.

“Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the incredible feedback,” she said.

The Cake Lady Dessert & Cafe, located at 88 Route 17M in Harriman, is open Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon.

AT&T Rallies on Report It May Sell DirecTV. Hopes For Dish Merger Revive. - Barron's

AT&T shares are trading higher Friday afternoon following a report that the company is exploring a deal for its DirecTV business.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that AT&T (ticker: T) has hired Goldman Sachs to discuss a potential sale of the satellite TV service to private-equity buyers. The article says potential buyers include Apollo Global Management and Platinum Equity.

AT&T declined to comment on the report.

AT&T acquired the satellite TV service in 2015 for $49 billion in a transaction that has not played out as hoped. At the time of the transaction, AT&T saw buying the service as a way to build its total video subscriber base to reduce its programming costs. But in recent years DirecTV has suffered deep subscriber losses, as consumers shift their viewing to online streaming services like Netflix (NFLX), Amazon (AMZN) Prime Video, and Disney’s (DIS) Hulu.

There is frequent speculation that DirecTV could eventually merge with Dish Network (DISH), its primary rival in satellite TV service. In 2002, the Federal Communications Commission blocked a proposed combination of EchoStar Communications, which owned Dish, and DirecTV, then operated by General Motors ’ (GM) Hughes Electronics, finding the proposed deal to be anticompetitive.

The Journal notes that Dish CEO Charlie Ergen has often called a merger of the two companies inevitable, and investors are viewing the report about a potential sale of DirecTV as a positive signal, which perhaps could rekindle potential merger discussions.

In late trading Friday, AT&T shares were up 1.2%, to $30.41, while Dish had spiked 7.1%, to $37.30.
